The idea was to edit the ID from a labyrinthine and unplayable mess to something generic that a wider playerbase could access and not just one faction.

It was to limit an ID that had no perceivable limits. A ban on piracy didn't come into it as you could simply define your enemies on an ad hoc basis.

Who are "we"? The SMA? Your decline had nothing to do with ID changes. Many factions thrive with freely available IDs. Quit blaming others for it. The VE faction managed to survive okay with a freely available ID.
