A rainy day, the people at the weather control station must have gotten orders to change from the normal quiet sunny climate Eden normally has ever single day. A strange request, Jack Derringer had just gone on duty when it began to pour down, I mean really pour.. People where running across the streets to get indoors. "Silly.." He thought to himself..
Jack knew that running trough the rain wouldn't matter, and hell, he enjoyed it. It was way to nice in Eden to feel comfortable. He took on the job as a security officer in Eden almost a year ago and became a citizen shortly afterwards.. Having been in security his entire life he had no other way to see life then work.. Working to make sure others live in safety.. And this place, Eden, was surely the closest he had come to complete peace..
When he was called in to secure a crimescene he almost laughed, not cause he was morbid you see, because he wasn't. But because it hadn't happened a real crime in months, latest being an hit and run down at the Trade district, but that was solved only minutes afterwards by looking at the cameras places across the streets.. But.. A murder..
That had never happened before.
Jack arrived at the scene in the patrol car about 10 minutes after the call was made.. 'Female, late 30's, none Virulian'
'Cause of death: unknown'
His Infolink pad on his arm lit up...
A none Virulian, so a new citizen probably..
He walked into the lobby of the appartment building in the residence quarters, several security forms where standing on guard in the lobby, each nodding at Jack as he entered.
He met his boss by the elevator, an older Virulian by the name of Joffrey an former Priest to add to that.. Most logical and downright.. Well, tenacious in his work..
"Mr Derringer.."
"Joffrey.. What do we have?"
"A murder of course..."
"...."
"Yes Joffrey but what kind of murder?"
"Well, the female have been scorched.. We do not know who she is.. All we know is that she had no cybernetics or nanites in her body."
They had walked into the elevator by this time. "Ok.. So she's not a Virulian, but what about DNA? We must have had her DNA on file right? Every citizen is on file after all.."
"Well Mr Derringer.. I think it's best if you just see it.."
As the elevator stopped Jack had been staring at Joffrey for a good 5 seconds without getting an answer..
Joffrey walked them both over to the room on the sixth floor where in the murder had taken place. Room 651.
As they entered the stench of burnt flesh was apparent..
The room was quite luxorious, even more so then most of the diplomatic quarters..
There was no sign of a break in or any sign of disturbance in the first few rooms.. 'Wow.. This is huge..' was all that Jack was thinking.. 'How could she have the rights to this appartment while I live in a dingy 3 roomer in EDF district..'
Joffrey showed him into the bed room, where on the bed lay a body.. But it was clearly not burnt.. Not by any normal means.. The skin on the female had been burnt open, as her entire body inside was burnt into a crisp.. Not even the EDF's experimental Plasma rifle would be able to do that.. This.. This was something completely different.
An science form entered the room, this one was named "Eros" and had been assigned to scan and present a cause of death if one was impossible for the investigative group to determine one.
After an hour Eros detirmined that the scans showed only that she had died of the extreme burns.. But not how or why..
"Minimal signatures of an unknown radiation type detected how ever.."
"Damnit.. Joffrey, I think we need outside help on this one.."
"To true.. I'l call it in.."
Grand Marshal Khaleen was going trough the training reports coming from the EDF training fascilities on Canaria when he got a message on his second console from Eden Security.
Code:
Homocide, unknown cause of death.. Unknown female
Requesting assistance from outside source
Another message appeared directly afterwards..
Code:
"Council recomends that both castes choose a select group to investigate the murder.. Who'm do you recomend Grand Marshall Khaleen?"
'Sent by Arin'
Khaleen sat and thought over this for a long time then he typed in the following:
Nathan Ward had spent the last three hours happily assembling a transponder for the communications hub of his transport ship Gaudium. It was slow intricate work that he could focus on, it was his favourite way of unwinding. It took his mind of the trips he had to make into Dublin. As Nathan had originally come from Bretonia going through the system could be hair raising. His small room was located inside the Virulain Temple itself, the room was made smaller by the clutter of gears, old bits of terminal and other detritus scattered around it. There were a handful of books that he had borrowed from the Library in the Enclave. Some were religious in nature, others he had simply borrowed because of their interesting titles.
It was mercifully quiet and subdued in the Temple, normally it was a hive of activity, members of the Animus Caste teaching new and home grown Virulians about the goodness of the Creator. The Corporis especially the EDF, to be found taking part in noisy simulations and boisterous discussions about weapons and ships and various other bit of macho posturing. Nathan quite liked many of the EDF however, especially Lyra Frost. For some bizarre reason Nathan did not understand everyone in the Enclave seemed to think he was in love with her'¦..Prosperous. She was charming, intelligent slightly intimidating'¦'¦attractive, he could not deny it. However his interest in her was purely platonic. He looked lovingly at a picture of her he had found when Christopher had hacked into her profile in the Virulian database. Nathan resisted the urge to read her file but could not resist the desire to keep the picture'¦purely platonic'¦.
'Well at least Chris is not here to give me a hard time.' The thought bought a smile to his face. Nathan was just reaching for a tool located on his cluttered desk, when a ghostly flickering face appeared in front of his, its eyes glittering with malice. Nathan screamed, his outstretched hand knocking the transponder of his desk. Nathan scrambled to catch and instead up turned his chair and landed flat on his back. The transponder clattered to the ground and fell apart into its constituent pieces. The face, Nathan now recognised as belonging to the troublesome AI. He was represented by a distorted flickering holographic image, of a man in his mid to late twenties. <Oh dear did I startle you?> Chris' voice oozed insincerity. Nathan glared at him, 'I had worked at that transponder for 3 hours.'
<Yes what took you three hours to make took me, without a physical presence I might add, 0.4.'¦no I tell a lie 0.3 seconds to destroy. It is a talent.> Chris grinned broadly at the ire clear on Nathan's face.
'Why do you do this to me Chris?'
<I have to bring a little action into your life>
'I can do that perfectly well for myself.' Nathan said as he straightened up an tried to smooth his unruly hair. <Of course you can't your totally useless.>
'That is where you are wrong, clearly I am not useless. The Patriarch's secretary Arin, has sent me a message asking me to help in an important matter.'
<What does the Patriarch need a waiter for an important diplomatic dinner?>
'No I have been asked to help investigate a murder' Nathan could not disguise the eagerness shown on his face. Chris could not hide the disgust on his. 'It will be so exciting, I've read all sorts of crime novels'¦I am virtually an expert'¦hmm'¦I wonder if I should bring my magnifying glass!?'
Angrily Chris responded <'¦you accepted?!>
Nathan grinned 'Yes for both of us.'
<Why in the name of the Creator did you say yes. You are member of the Animus Caste, your job is help look after the spiritual needs of the Virulian Enclave, not to play Inspector Hornby investigates!>
'It is our duty to help. Besides if we find the poor unfortunate victim has a family, they will likely need spiritual help.'
<Yes'¦Yes duty whatever> said Chris dismissively with a wave of his hand. <What use are you going to be? Crime novels are hardly a preparation. Besides this is murder we are talking about'¦and your hardly a fan of danger.>
'True but I heard'¦' Nathan smiled a dreamy far off smile ''¦Lyra will be there.'
Chris knew that with Lyra there Nathan would not be persuaded to turn down the assignment, he left to prepare transportation to the city. <Nathan I'll prepare the travel, bring a coat it's raining on Eden>. Nathan clearly was not listening caught as he was in happy thoughts. Chris muttered <and I'll leave you to dribble in private.>
The security guards outside the lobby of the appartment complex had been hard at work keeping the residence from entering the building, two hours it had been cut of from any resident whom where asked to wait in the nearby restaurant under close guard by a second group of security officers.
Jack was standing at the entrance when Nathan came walking down the street, running was more like it, his coat drawn over his head as it continued to pour down rain in Eden.
He raised an questioning eyebrow at the youth as the greeted him at the door 'First of 4...' Jack thought to himself as he looked at the young mans ID card..
It was just another long sleepless night for Lyra, just one of many. At least lately. She was sitting on ground, in the middle of the brige section, meditating.
Something was troubling her though she was not sure what.
"A message..?" she thought. She didnt had a personal computer per see, she was a computer. At least to some extend. She pun on black robes and left the ship.
Phasmatis was curently docked on Eden space port because of sheduled resuply and refueling. It didnt had a crew, it had just Lyra. Preserver Lyra Frost.
It didnt took long to get to the location described in the message, public transports were fast enough. Looking out of the window on the falling rain was somehow soothing effect on her, she calmed a bit.
Still very unsure why she was called she aproached one of the security officers standing in front of room.
"May the Creator bless you."
"VE|AC-Aramis" was slowly drifting in the Omicron Kappa system's asteroid field, with all systems disengaged. Nothing alive was inside, nothing moved, nothing illuminated its cockpit. It almost seemed the ship was dead.
Only after another Nomad patrol passed by, accounting the ship as a wreck and showing no interest, as no life signs inside were detected, the ship came alive again.
<Noone around again, Sire.> *Good. Then I will continue. These 'Asteroids' have very interesting contents in them...*
Explorer arrived to Kappa a day ago, when he digged up some info that the asteroids in this system are strange, and may contain something wierd and even dangerous inside.
Now he was in his mini-lab that he installed onboard of the Spatial, instead of the living quarters that he didn't need. He didn't need a microscope to examine the piece of the strange rock, his eyes were heavily augmented.
He used only his onboard electronic microscope, when he needed something to be examined really close. But his research was interrupted every few hours by passing Nomad patrols, and he had to turn off all the ship systems to be undetected.
His own armor plates shielded himself from scanning, allowing him to stay on.
But he just began to continue his research, when Aramis interrupted him again.
<Sire, we have an urgent message from the Enclave Council.> *What is it?* If explorer could, he would sigh now. They just won't let him finish. Oh well, he will come back later... <A murder occured on planet Gran Canaria, Eden colony. They want you to help the investigation.>
A murder... That did't happen frequently at Gran Canaria... at Eden, particularly, it didn't happen at all.
That might be entertaining.
*Engage the cruise engines, we are participating in this investigation.
Hopefully I will do some more research on-route.* <That means I can drive?> *Correct.* <Wow. That does'n happen often.> *Time has a price, and I am not spending it on piloting when you can do it, while there is some unfinished research I have. So, bring this ship to Gran Canaria... safely, I would ask.* <Thanks! We approached Gamma jumphole, engaging jump systems.>

...It was raining in Eden.
And Explorer hated rain. No matter what, the water was getting into his cirquits, every time he had a misfortune of getting into a rain.
If he could, he would probably curse the responsibles, as he knew that weather at Eden was rather artificial.
But, he just did a thing he didn't do frequently... he put on some additional clothes, a black wide-pented hat and a long coat of the same color.
Those were not ordinary clothes, they had a slight electromagnetic field on them, repelling the water drops and allowing him to stay dry even in the hardest rain.
He landed at the Temple docking bay, and headed for the exit of the ship. *Aramis, stay on connection, I might need information from databases, as well as some other things. I will be out for a while.* <Aye, Sire. Come back soon.>
People at the streets of Eden openly stared at him, and that had a reason: A long figure in a hat and a coat, with bright blue eyes shining from under the hat...
But he didn't care even a bit about that. The only thing he cared about was the route to the place he was told about in the message.
He stopped for a second, examining, or rather, recording, the scheme of public flyer transports. Then he entered one of them and disappeared.
When he arrived at the mentioned room's door, he found there two security officers, as well as a woman that just was entering the room.
"May the Creator bless you", she said, nodding to them and passing through. A Temple insider...
Explorer noticed that security guys were staring at him rather unfriendly.
*May the Creator bless you*, he howled, and guards flinched from his voice a bit. *I am Lector Explorer, arrived to help with the investigation of the murder.* He showed them his ID card.
After a second hesitation they finally let him in...
"The weather seems to be continuing and it doesn't seem like its going to stop soon." Was heard from the television news in a different room, Serj was working out on a weight machine. "396, 397, 398, 399 and 400" he counted then grabbed a towel and wiped off the sweat, proceeding to the bathroom he heard his console but thought it was nothing important. "I'll check it out later." He said, then stepped into the bathroom and as he removed his training clothes putting them in the dirty bin he stepped into the shower cabin.
After about 10 minutes when he was done he stepped out, wiped himself and put the towel around his kidney area, he then left the bathroom approaching his closet and taking out some clothes. (Black skin-tight shirt, a pair of camouflage pantaloons and combat boots). After suiting up he remembered that he recieved a message, approaching the console he light a cigarette and opened the message coming from 'Grand Marshall' Khaleen, the message said: "'Sentry' Serj Dahlin, I chose you alongside of some other Virulians for a murder investigation, meet up with the case lead at the adress at the entrance of the Lobby of the apartment complex, Khaleen out." Serj smiled and nodded in his head thinking "Will do sir." He approached his closet in a rush and grabbed his hooded coat (Black) and his motorcycle headgear, he continued in a fast-pace walk towards the garage of his apartment, jumped onto his motorcycle putting on the helmet and rode off to the adress given to him by Khaleen.
After about 10 minutes Serj arrived in front of the apartment building the murder took place in, he rode into the garage and locked up his motorcycle, he left the garage floor and approached the lobby where he took a lift to the 6th floor. Once the elevator arrived at the 6th floor he started searching for room 651, it wasn't long before he found it since a lot of people were standing infront of the room as Serj found out when the lead investigator noticed him. "'Sentry' Serj Dahlin at your service sir." He turned to the rest of them and offered a friendly handshake as he introduced himself again. "'Sentry' Serj Dahiln."
