Yes they should have. They likely had no idea what awaited them, and there was also likely no reason not to. Besides, if they didn't, we wouldn't have Freelancer as we do today! :D

Yeah they should have left! Why wouldn't they? Even if they got all peaceful-like, why not send an exploration fleet to Sirus?
