You'll get OORP bomber-whored for having one, and the people doing this to you won't get sanctioned because they're using barely justifiable RP reasons to hide behind their lust for PVP.

Hire some mercenaries to escort you to the system you're going to. If you're too broke to do that, watch the "long range scanners" for pirates in the systems you're going through. But I suggest the hiring of people to escort you, encourages RP.

If you're really stuck for money, mine silver in Colorado for a bit. That'll get your reserves up, at least to buy a reasonable freighter.
