totally missed out on the last word of thread title.
woohooo, well done!
wait, what?
find an idea. frack it, steal an idea, and then make a business out of it. go to every networking meeting in your town (bni, rotary, meetup), and tell them why you are different (i.e. higher product value/level of after sale service/both), and why you are cheaper (less overheads).
for service industry, get clients through word of mouth. means you gotta get out there and put your words in other peoples mouths.
for sales, means you gotta go out there and demonstrate your product to as many peoples as will stay still for 15 seconds at the barn dance/car meet/farmers markett/whatever as you can.
in times of financial difficulties, its the flexible sme's that survive.

As the veteran of 6 lay-offs in my lifetime, (I'm 45) I can tell you that it sucks and it's never easy but as the old saying goes, "it's not how many times you get knocked down but how many times you get back up again."
I'll offer some advice.
-Temp agencies: If you can't find anything, they fill in the voids nicely. No benefits but it's a check and if you finish one job, they're pretty good about getting you another. If a company likes you, they may offer you something permanent.
-Long breaks: Don't do it. The longer I was out of work, the more angry I got.
-Feelers: Lots of them. Job sites on the web, job fairs, etc. Plug away.
-Military: Yes, that's right. Despite what some say, the military is a good way to keep at work. You'll have a job, pay check, benefits and you'll be taken care of. You can do this full or part time and you can take your experience with you.
I was out of service for 12 years at my 6th lay-off. Going back in was the best thing I could have done as I landed a full-time job doing what I love, fixing helicopters. I also got put on flight status and crew my own bird.
Well, you can always browse for jobs in the porn industry. And no, I am not kidding, it's something you could do from home (oh the irony) often in service for larger websites or content suppliers. It's not as honorary as being a lawyer, sure, but it's usually really comfortable job that you can alter its work schedule.
Not that I work in one, but I know someone who does and it doesn't sound all bad from him. I, personally, have no need to search for a job for at least the next 8 years because of a contract I've signed, so ye.
I was without of job only once when my own business bankrupt.
Quickly, by accident, I got an offer, and although I wanted to establish another own business, I took that job as temporary solution. I had bills to pay.
And I am in this job 20 years already. I don't know if is good to stay at same job so long.
The older I get the harder it will be to find another job. I know only this job, I don't have any other experience. I should quit from this job years ago, but I was afraid.
Another case, my friend who worked in this company, two years ago was fired because one day the boss said, he doesn't need him anymore, elimination of jobs, cutting costs. My friend broke up mentally, he had to go to the doctor. After a three months he got an offer from a bank, that works with our company. Now he is a high manager there and he is happy because he is economist and he always wanted to work in a bank.
Nobody knows what future will bring us. We must look at it in hope.

I think you meant to say honorable, not honorary ...
I KNOW you didn't mean to say honest ...
EDIT: My son, when he first moved down here in June of this year, got a job working part-time at Hobby Lobby. Then he also got a second part-time job working at Home Depot. Now he has a job working as a full time bar cleaner and part time bartender at Little Darlings. So ... hey, if you're old enough, you too can find yourself surrounded by half naked women and getting paid to be that way. (And he's making, with tips, about $16 an hour, and working a 40 hour week.)

A) Yes, you are right, thanks for the correction, since when it comes to honesty I am pretty sure any job out there beats by a long shot.
B) Not looking for a job at the moment, though getting paid to hang out with naked women doesn't sound bad at all. Though 16$ an hour sounds like kinda low payment.
