On Free Trading:
I love this idea; and I was really sad to see Freelancer didn't model it after I started playing. It keeps trading interesting and fresh. It may not be an honest space-capitalism-simulator like EVE online, but it would bring the game a much greater taste of realism.
Balthazzar, you mention other servers: has someone already modded Freelancer to work like this? If so, I'm extremely impressed.
As for the super-asteroids, I've seen an idea for a 'mining gun' which had a large area of effect damage (so, when fired, it'd pop all the little asteroids in an area). Wouldn't this yield the same result (increased mining yield for mining specialized ships) and neutralize the asteroid-as-a-ship complications?

Yes. I would rather agree with the gun idea. Sorry Telbasta but i think you idea just has to many flaws (that you yourself mentioned)
And yes. For dynamic trading see Galactica 2 mod.
Now back on topic. I think mining + trading should go like this:
miner ships (as vulnerable as they are) mine 10X faster than other ships. (the gun idea.)
Resources mined are "raw" or "special" and worth more when selling.
Trader ships go forth and back from the mining area buying and selling goods (since they are more agile and faster than mining ships.)
Mercs / Police / BH protect the miners and traderutes.
Pirates tax traders
Terrorists try to destroy miners and waste the guards. (they dont need money... they simply want chaos.)
This would sum it up and would work perfectly if only the miner ships really mined faster than other ships due to some gun modifications.
The gun idea has problems otherwise the spawn radius for the rocks would have to be increased by a large number, and with that anyone with a chaingun would beable to have something masureable in effect
The economy is being worked on, but it will not be dynamic. At least, it won't be in 4.85. Who can tell what the future may bring? But I wouldn't get your hopes up. Those who might be willing to help or want a bit more info, check out the Economic development topic.
