I have no idea what I'm doing.
Lets consider laptop X. Laptop X is wired with an ethernet cable directly to a switch on the wall like this
A Wi-Fi would be better than this.
My idea is to get a wireless router like this one and connect the ethernet cable to it instead of the laptop, magically getting wi-fi on the laptop. (after doing the settings).
Would that be possible at all and if not, what do I need to do..

yes, possible. you can use two wifi routers as a WAN, one connected to the line, one connected to the device that doesnt have a decent wifi radio transceiver. router one (connected to outside world) is set up as an ordinary network. router 2 is given the access to router one. you can now plug in the dvd controller, and allow it access to the movies folder on your pc connected to router1, so you can download all you want, and watch on the tv without having to burn discs.

for gameplay, i'd recommend using a wire though, as there are now two routers to be interfered with by traffic, excess emf, cell phones, etc

Thanks for the answer, so I'll need 2 routers? Not possible with one? The laptop has no issues getting wi-fi, can't it connect directly to the first one?
And this isn't for me, so no gaming at all.

i can see no reason that you should not be able to achieve a wifi set up. But I am not sure that is the correct device for the connection you show. Get a device suitable for use with your telco. Your local supplier should be able to help you with that and set up advice

you mean, use a router as normal? yes, just plug in the router to the ethernet socket, watch the pretty lights for about 3 minutes and then connect to the router via wifi, log into the router and then set passwords, open ports for torrents, etc

Thank you both for the responses, that's what I was looking for.
