I am somewhat indifferent there. Big explosions are pretty, but they need time to be animated. I don't like to siege POBs anyways. It is too boring for me, no matter how spectacular the explosion is.

Honestly, all explosions in this game are comically small. Think about it -- even a fighter has a friggin' nuclear fusion reactor in its engine compartment. Imagine the size of the boom THAT thing makes!

I'm quite sure it was a gameplay decision to not cause frustration, either by creating a big deadly zone when blowing up an enemy ship or by blinding the player when destroying a ship.
