Are there any tips on avoiding trade lane "fender benders" while in a formation? So far me and my wing-men have had several incidents with devastating results.

Don't go through in formation.

Yeah, I learnt that the hard way a while back. It was right at the last lane to Planet Denver as well (with a full load of niob ore). Well at least I wasn't the other person who alt-tabbed whilst in the lane and crashed into the planet full of ore.

xD, It took me a while to stop laughing from that though.

Leaving enough space between the ships is also recommended. Sometimes ships lag back and forth in the lane with ugly results.

Also, be careful when entering lanes from the middle rings. It's very easy to get ran over by a NPC train or a random battleship.

Lastly, if the lane gets disrupted in front of you, it's better to exit manually before the lane throws you out. Otherwise, all ships are thrown out in the exact spot, inside each other, causing a pile-up.

Danny-boy has a valid point.

Don't alt+tab in trade lanes. It will never end well.

Good rule of thumb: Just don't use formation at all unless you are flying in open space. If you are navigating lanes, it's safest to fly manually, even if it's tedious.
