A Question about FL Severs

I do not mean to be rude at all to the server adims and i am aware or the shedualed upgrade but it would appear that the server is spending a rather large amount of time down at the moment and so i have a couple of questions

1. How difficult is it to run an internet server on both the person (host) and the hosts technology?

2. what kind of a rig do you need?

and the sort of final summary question

Is it possible to run (on someone elses computer) a backup server, where we can meet, fly around and generally do local fun things (i am aware of the lack of the ability to save)

PS if you feel this is rude or is very easily debunked admins delet

I don't know too much about servers but, I can give a few general answers as I understand them. The server issue should be limited as it is getting upgraded to a more reliable server soon. All computers will slow down with several hours or days of running if not briefly shut down and re-started. The server has an automatic shut-down and re-start cycle and just sometimes fails to re-boot properly.

1. It is not difficult to set up or run a server. I do it often when the server is down for a few hours of game play, no-one else has ever logged on when I do and I usually fly alone. I guess waiting for Discovery to come back up as who wants to start a character on a server that is only on a few hours a month. The server set-up is in your Freelancer game files. Click START, then ALL PROGRAMS, then Microsoft Games, then hold your curser over Freelancer and select FLServer.

2. I do it on both my office PC (minimal [read bare essencials] set-up) and my home PC (4 years old) so not too much needed to set it up.

3. The problem as I see it is that you cannot run the Discovery server from another server unless they are linked together in some way. So, you can't host the Discovery site when the main server goes down.

Excuse and correct any errors if I am wrong but, this is they way I understand it to be.

thanks, i knew about the upgrade and the lack of any way of loading the same server accounts, i just had the same idea as you, as im at home on hols and have a good network and comp to run it on

i notice your server just now but could not get on, guess its due to my dad and brother browsing internet as well on other comps

so it would be possible for someone to set up a backup server if they knew they had the time.

Therefore i ask the community whether there is anyone who would be able to set up an official (im going to ask admin if its ok to call it official) back up server where we could log on and just have fun. if you would like to set it up post your computer and conection specs and your time availability (setup any time or just between cirtain hours).
