Freeworlds: Tides of War is probably the mod he was referring. It is a combination between Freeworlds and Tides of War (2 separated mods) which developers combined and together are pushing their combined ideas forward.
The mod contains ships with their - realistic size - so there you can get the point of "caps cant be killed by fighters" and the opposite cuz due to their size (caps being large and snubs being super small) hit chances are low.

Anyway - there the ships are using "hyperspace buoy" which if "docked" to - are transporting you to another system. But overall you move by cruise speed. There are no lanes not jump gates so such issues, that present here with ship size - are nonexistent there.

What Haste stated about caps using their own method to move around is cool. The jump drives should be the normal way for caps to move around to "teleport" from system to system and if necessary cruise inside, instead to use lanes. But like he stated it might require more work to be done . Sad
