It seems aimed at existing players.

Forum acount name?: there's a forum I have to join?
Character name?: I don't know - ive only just downloadad it.
Ship name?: As above
Species?: I have no idea what most of them are.
Age?: Does it matter?
Gender?: Again
Faction?: err. what?

I agree with the idea in principal, but I think that this, in its' current form, will put new players off.

When a player's character is associated with them on the forums, it opens up avenues for negative criticism and griefing that don't exist when the character is anonymously played.

There are also enough rules and in-game laws that are required forum reading that any more artificial player management is another annoying hurdle to leap over.

I don't think it is a good idea to impose such template. However, it could be very useful as a tool to help people to create their characters (especially to those who are not familiar with traditional roleplaying games)

well, I don't think it needs to be forced, but it could be good in the sense that it explains "what discovery has and what discovery allows". Of course, I am a person, who still sees a lot potential in the connectivity of the game and the forum. Carrying new players to the variety of the game, instead of throwing them into the veil of do's. And exactly that is the matter to look at. It took me ages to know "even just" the minor knowledge and rules mandatory having fun here.
If there are ways to ease the process, we should take use of it. Like a character creator plugin with googledocs or even the ingame entrance system, with one-way-jumpholes with banners containing small faction-descriptions added to the standardrestart I mentioned in another thread once.

If the Wiki were to be sufficiently updated, a lot of the template could link to that, so players could see what a "faction" is and what each one represents.

I think that could make it of more use to new players.
