Blodo's got it. As someone that took about a 10 month break from disco, and mind you i took the hiatus after more people came and rules were expanded etc, to come in now there are more laws one must memorize than in bloody real life.

Look by making our laws curb the excesses of few rather than the movement of the majority, we fall into a trap whereby every time someone comes and does something outrageous there is a proposal to ban whatever they did, and the punishments themselves are getting quite harsh. There used to be alot more warnings and fewer bannings.

And while the community may demand a law or demand more rights, it is up to the leaders of the server to be a sober second thought. Even should 90% of us want a law, the admins need to be able to look objectively and say, hey, while everyone might want it, in the long term is this the best solution, is this the best option for the server.

The atmosphere that should a rule be broken the heavens must break open and the breaker drowned in a righteous deluge of forum lawyers shouting from the tree tops that there is a necessity for a ban, or we must increase penalties or laws, or something of that nature, is ridiculous, and leads to the alienation of new players. Also it leads to an atmosphere on the server that, damn, since i don't want to be slapped with one of many sanctions i must screenie all portions of my game, since the dude I'm fighting with or talking too is mellow or is fine, but every tom dick and harry on the server is going to jump on any infraction minor or not of the rules.

We have to put the majority ahead of the minority when it comes to infractions, just because a few 12yr olds abuse a portion of the game, doesnt mean that everyone also must A) propose new rule B)waste time arguing about said rule C)getting upset by outcome and flaming D)have it made law and sets precedent for next time two shmucks screw up we all have to suffer.

Also to reiterate, admins, you arent beholden to the server population, benevolent dictatorship correct? If a proposed law looks unjust, then it is no law and must be stopped.

I say we need to cool our heels and stop the atmosphere of constant rule reporting, rule lawyering, and rule proposing, hell the BHG are a pittance of their former selves, and for what some idiots go screwing around. Justice should be tailored to the individual rather than the masses.

However, the admins are not the only ones responsible, we as players should step back and take a breather and don't let a couple deaths from a pvp-whore getting us rule happy, its a game, just because someone ruined your fun, don't let everyone else's be ruined too.

Though having a quick temper and broken some of these rules myself, I do think that certain rules, like the 4-hour rule, should be kept, no matter what. When you get some idiot capwhore flying around, blowing sh*t up for no reason, kill them and tell them off. I don't like the idea of seeing a Corsair in Omicron Beta continually undocking from Ruiz attacking a 101st pilot that killed him about 5 times. [Yeah, that happened.]

Things like the cruise rule, I'm a bit iffy on. If I were in a gunboat [which aren't so much anti-cap as anti-fighter] and some bomber that fought with me thrusts off and tells me I can't cruise, I get a bit ticked. We should either allow certain ships to do it under special circumstances, or make a range that you have to stay in, in order to stay engaged.

As for the range, I say 4.0k. Any more than that, and you're outta there.

Let me tell you. We needed no government, then. We had no rules. We needed no rules. We were fair to each other, we accepted our losses and celebrated our wins. So when Xoria tells you that we have rules for a reason, I can ensure you there are reasons, and they are very good ones... They weren't made just to annoy the folks that could get along and talk-out their differences. Though, there were often flames, we all were friends in the end, or at least friendly rivals. Such as Dab and myself. Never quite a friend, but nothing against him, except his huge ego. : P
Exactly right, mate. Sort of what I was saying above. We played to have fun. What people need to begin to realize is that this a combat game. We fight, we kill, we die. We respawn. We have added a role-playing community around this game to make it more realistic. We made it more fun, gave it more depth, more feel, made it even more escapist that it already was. It is still, however, a game.

[Sorry for the double post, but...]

When I started on the server, I was a n00b. Seriously, I worked my way up to a rhino and my brother, who showed me the game, loaned me a few million to buy a transport. Usually I spent my time mining in Colorado or floating about in New York. I wasn't very wise to the rules. I argued in OoC, said OoC things, but I got the gist of the RP idea when I made my IMG character. It was only back in August, and those rules mentioned were normal to me. I had no clue they hadn't always pre-existed. I've become a decent RPer, and a skilled fighter in bombers.

My story, for some relevance.:P

====Xoria Quote: Sanction Threads====
Quote:There is no way for us to tell if you used F1 intentionally, or if your internet connection was lost through no fault of your own.
If we accepted people's claims about it everyone would always get away with using F1, so it's very simple, if your character is disconnected from the server during an encounter with another player, you are subject to the penalty, whether it was intentional or not, no exceptions, and it's permanent. You'll have to earn back whatever you had.

If people played by their honor, not only would we not have so many sanctions, but we'd have more trust. If people have dial-up and their connection gets screwed, I honestly don't think they should lose their stuff. I had a similar thing happen to me once - my internet acts up on occasion, or my network cable comes unplugged. A couple of harvesters were pirating me as the cable came unplugged, or whatever happened.

I tried talking to them, they didn't care to listen, just got me sanctioned. Yeah, I know I engaged with my battleship, in that I was wrong, but sanctioning someone because their internet crashes or something of the like, when they ARE telling the truth, to me seems unfair.

Yes, one thing that everyone must remember... everyone was a noob at one point here. When I first joined I had no idea what RP was, I talked in OOC and even accidentally broke the rules on occasion. Back then people wern't ready to get me banned right away, they calmly and politely explained what I was supposed to do and I got it.

Also my internet connection was messed up, but in my organized fights, I knew my enemies and they knew me. They were informed that my inet was screwy and when I randomly was gone they understood. Once I even left like 4 or 5 times in one fight. However, I have yet to be banned, warned or anything of the like.

When there are problems many times the best way to solve them by fixing your own problems first. Yes, everyone has problems.

Just some things to think about.

BTW that was a long time ago... look at my join date.

Sh*t happens, but some people don't seem to get it, ergo, they ask for more rules to prevent the inevitable or occasional screw-up. >_<
