U have to start small. Choose a freightor that you like and get it. I try to get to the humpback, armored transport, and then on to the train, and finally the train. Once you have a train, use a good run, and you're golden.

I got a large train in about 12 hours....or were they 24? :P
Here`s the chain: Starflier - Rhino - Clydesdale - Drone - Humpback - Repaird Ship - Armored transport - transport - large transport - train/large train.
Get a good route and you`ll soon be rich.

Didn't get rich quick, but sure enjoyed my old freighter, the X-Shuttle.
Only 250 cargo, turns like a tank, but in all my runs, never sucked vacuum.

Mostly I'd say explore everywhere you can and keep a close eye on the prices of things. There 's some great routes out there, just gotta find em. I also don't know if it's considered bad form or not, but once you get up to an armored transport or the like, try to tag along with someone who has a train or large transport. I also started making use of my scanner to see what the hot commodities are. It might be cheap and sneaky, but if it were real buisness that's what I'd do :) .

Starting is slow but, once you have a 400+ cargo capacity, it takes off. The answer is: TRADING, TRADING, TRADING!
I use my starflier to cruise arount and loot wrecks in Manhatten then buy a heavy fighter then visit surrounding systems for wrecks until I can afford a freighter with more cargo capacity like an Kadesh, Humpback or Taiidan freighter. My favorite is the Dromidary. The rhino is a poor choice as most heavy fighters have the same cargo capacity and better ability to survive attacks. Then I trade within known trade lane systems (borderworld systems = heavy pirate activity) until I have $1.8 million. There are some very lucrative routes that only involve going 2 systems away from Manhatten.
Next I like the Turadic Raiders Freighter- 400 cargo capacity and strong enough armor to visit the outer systems (buy a shield upgrade!!, expect to spend $80,000 for a GOOD freighter shield). Armored transport is also nice but $300,000 more.
Now you are a real trader. Ask to tag along with a large train or transport and learn the good routes. Some routes will get $1-2 million per trip.
At $6-7 million buy a transport and rake in the money saving up $23 million for that Large train. Now your trips can bring in $13-14 million a trip thru pirate infested territory with a ship strong enough to survive the passage!
Most ship locations are in the READ ME but ask other players in game and they will give locations and recommend trade routes.
