Hello, I've been freelancing around since the game was out and only recently started reading Frank Herbert's Duna series (actually started from prequels in chronological order). And I see an obvious analogy between Cardamine from Malta and Melange from Arrakis: euhporia, prolonged lifespan, enchanced awareness, fatal withdrawal, etc..
Which makes me wonder if Freelancer could actually be Dune's long-shot prequel? Other then that, I could only call it a bad case of plagiarism or is it really such a widespread cliche, never thought about Freelancer in that way before..
There was once a rather extensive list of similar substances used in SCIFI, actually. Though I do not recall what the link was. But ye, cliche.

There are a few tropes that fit Cardamine and the Outcasts. The former would be Fantastic Drug and the other Cursed with Awesome. So, yeah, it's happened before on an abstract level.
