There's really 2 kinds of smuggling: the kind where you take stuff (any stuff) to a base that wants it through the space of those that would prefer to stop it (eg:Deuterium to Kusari via Bretonia), and the kind where you take stuff to a base whose owners consider that stuff to be illegal (eg: card to Manhattan).
For the first kind, you can sacrifice pretty much everything (save, perhaps, maneuverability (most pirate bases are in asteroid fields)) for cargo space, as you can carefully plan your routes so that you will encounter no lawfuls, anyway. Good ships in ths category include Whales, Pirate Trains and Trains (only if you don't wanna go through asteroids), among ohers.
For the other type, durability, firepower, CMs and the ability to go unoticed are most important. Some people prefer firepower over hiding, and vice versa. Good choises for this work include Borderworld Transports, Container Transports, Behemoths/Percherons/Big Dragons/Mammoths (espeially Behemoths..those things are similar to Container Transports in the mini-gunboat area, as well as being house transports...), Pirate Transports (for the "shoot it out" kind of guy) and anything that can mount a CM.

Prison liner... it is best ship for slavers. Armed with fast refite turrets and cap. armor mk. VI it is flying fortres. Also using prison liner have RP reason.
