Nope, not the same.

Project Starflier's development is not public for the time being, but you can occasionally find mentions of it in various discussions on the forums.
This is likely to change in the coming months as good progress is being made on the basics of the game, at which point its development will be much more visible.

This thread is where it pretty much all began, if you're curious.

The notion of "Freelancer 2" has done the rounds every 6 months or so, for as long as I can remember. There actually was a "Freelancer 2" (aka. Project Lonestar) for the Xbox some years ago, but by all accounts it was just a reskinning of FL and a complete dogs breakfast. So don't bother googling it Wink

Over the years there have also been abortive attempts by the fan community to obtain the source code from Micro$oft, who has in turn told everyone to "get stuffed" despite showing zero interest in an ongoing FL franchise, much to no one's surprise.

As other people have commented there are currently a couple of projects to reinvent FL in Unity, which look very promising, and probably a far better idea than trying to work the huge pile of spaghetti called "Microsoft code". Unfortunately unless the devs introduce something entirely new to the gameplay and/or universe, they'll be branded "FL clones" and only really of interest to hardcore fans. (Me included)

Oh and don't even bother mentioning that vaporware Star Citizen.

tl;dr: Don't hold your breath. Although Discovery is so damn huge it could almost be considered FL2.

I know right... In my mind, FL2 would be a game that basically improves all the quirkiness of FL, expands the universe, add a few (just a few) new features, but keep the overall game as simple as 123. TBH I didn't quite care about the campaign in FL, especially the part where you can't continue the story until you make enough money... I wish it offered more emergent single player experience, like mount&blade.

Remember who owns the first one, suggest reference to the first Freelancer game in a impartial spin-off?

I'd analyse Freelancer Discovery, PULL all non-FL features out, like Jumpdrives, Docking Modules, & IDs.

Then work a new system.

I know it sounds a little frustrating, coming from me, but it's better then trying to 'take on' Microsoft and get your domain squashed.

...

That's just a thought though. An honest one.

What do you think are the best non-FL features added in discovery, and why?
