flaws of their old worlds. The Zoners are the Sirian incarnation of this time-honored tradition, chasing after the ever-expanding borders of civilization to escape the oppressive heel of the Houses. For centuries, their use of clever political and economic maneuvering prevented hostile parties from exploiting them.
This tenuous peace crashed in flame for the denizens of Freeport 2, when, with the support of the Unioners and Battlegroup Harmony, pirates and criminals began to ransack the station after it was effectively cut off from the law enforcement and military of Rheinland and Liberty following the destructive war between the two Houses. Only a handful of Zoners actually tried to stay behind and try to protect their businesses and homes aboard the station, although many of these idealistic souls had their shops pilfered, their homes raided, and met their end at the hands of barbarians without any semblance of a moral compass.
Many refugees elected to flee into the Republic of Liberty’s last supposed vestige of true freedom: Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, despite being declared an autonomous protectorate within Liberty space, Pennsylvania still felt the iron boot heel of House rules and regulations. Even Bethlehem Station, the last truly Zoner-governed station in the system, was not free from the corruption and oppression Liberty ironically spread with its cancerous seed of so-called “law and order.”
Bitter and vengeful, the few remnants of Freeport 2’s population still willing banded together with radical Zoners still living in the Pennsylvania system and an assortment of mercenaries and freelancers to form a paramilitary organization capable of dealing significant damage to the unlawful elements in control of Bering. This group would come to be known as the Frontier Confederacy.
Headed by a governing council known as Liberation Command, the Confederacy works tirelessly to liberate Bering alongside other militant Zoner factions and groups. Due to resource and manpower constraints, any organizing of capable combat pilots and mercenaries into standing squadrons has been impossible. With such a small pool of dedicated personnel, members of the Confederacy are required to be proficient in a number of jobs, including noncombatant and combatant roles. This has resulted in the formation of so-called “Minutemen Squadrons”: Collections of snubcraft able to deployed at a minute’s notice by whichever combat pilots happen to be immediately available.
Although Liberation Command has only declared the Liberation of Bering for now, it plans to eventually help replace the now-defunct Confederation of Freeports with a governing body less intent on restricting the individual freedoms of Zoners and their stations, and instead be more focused on rabid defense of freedom and the Zoner way of life.
