If you are involved in RP with a hostile faction, and you find yourself taking offence at what is being said, it's time to take a step back from your computer. Take a breath. Take a swig from your drink. Then, if you're still feeling offended, log off.
Or just open fire. You won't have time to feel offended anymore, when you're busy dodging burning hot death.
Brought to you by Sivran The Newb
I've suffered RSI in my right hand and am now even more useless in PVP. I now fly with a trackball!
\CS\Helkos - Teh cyborg Newb, formerly Sivran the Clueless Freelancer, gets pwned in PVP.
SmallTimeTrader - Teh Trader Newb, under new management!
Oracle|Randy - Randall Lamar, Teh Pacifist, Oracle-follower Newb (at least I don't have to worry about PVP on this char!
Texan_Twang - Texan Bounty Hunter, flies a Bomber, rarely played. Almost wish I could move him to another account and sell him.
Gaijin or tea sipper are both alright in my books, they are said in character, clearly. Boasting about winning a fight when you outnumber the enemy 2 to 1 is somewhat low. I can take it, Im the one to attack in the first place, but it gets tiring after a time. Killing me is no achivement. I imagine Gaians getting killed a lot more, because its too much of a nuisance to use prison space for some green thumbs. Also getting called coward when you run away from Armed Forces does not feel nice at all (well in my case it was right, the odds were equal and I indeed roleplayed a coward). Im just a Gaian and well, you're armed!
Also I deem appropiorate for Ensigns and Lietenaunts to act like a disorganised mob, but when there is a commanding officer on deck he should order (not just ask, but of course in RP) them to shut up with the dog-eating stuff. Not because he wouldnt agree, he may as well have the very same opinion, but to maintain order and discipline among the troops. Thats what defines professional armed forces from a mob.
Boasting after the fight is what puts down the most poeple I think. But then again, you go by character. I expect to hear "It was just a Gaian", but Armed Forces should be much more cautious when it comes to Naval Forces. I usually go with "Gladd its over", or "That one was a tough one", "I think we made it" or the formal and everyones favourite "Target destroyed." "I've managed to eliminate enemy fighter. I think we're clear."
I think whole point isnt using infults but using ONLY insults and than plain pew pew. In curent situation you can have predefined few messages with insults, and than just send them in random order and nobody will know you are just pushing buttons on your keyboard and not doing RP.
edit: since Drake didnt get point I'll try to explain it.
I actually don't think that's the original point at all, the thread has nothing to do with PvP in any form. And I don't know of anyone, in any faction, who keeps their insults pre-recorded.
Insults are all to do with the RP of the character that is saying them. Once people figure it out that any insult ingame without the "//" tag in front is simply RP, we might actually get rid of a lot of the drama on the server. In the mean time however let me just compare my Bretonian Privateer character, a man who has been to prison repeatedly, who was granted a pardon for his crimes on the basis of serving behind the lines instead (Dirty Dozen style indeed) with my Red Hessian character, civilian turned nigh revolutionary leader. One of them says whatever he wants, insults people, and is generally obnoxious to everyone around him, while the other acts more like an officer and politician than most enlisted men and likely even officers would. Why? Different RP, guys.
And lest we forget, since in real life we're not that far removed...
Just after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Fleet Admiral William Halsey said, "Before this war is over, the Japanese language will only be spoken in Hell." He said, "Kill Japs, Kill Japs, Kill More Japs!" There were 'Jap hunting licenses' issued, and as we all know, internment camps and such. Moving forward to today, there is STILL vast hatred between Chinese / Koreans and Japanese. In polite society they disguise it - but again, let them get their guards down...
Now - fast forward abou 900 years. You've two different governmental, ethnic, and societal backgrounds. Bretonia - everything we've come to expect, know, love, and remember from Victorian England. And you've Kusari - a society that has made accomodations with technology but for survival has reverted to the ways of feudalism (sort of like between the visit of Commodore Perry and WWII).
In a time of war and conflict, there won't be niceties. There's a reason why there's the old cliche', swears like a sailor. Those of us who have served in the military know that creative uses of language is quite common and in everyday usage. Combine that with stress, and - IF this were real life, I'm sure you'd see space turn blue with the epithats and comments going back and forth between ALL BAF and KNF units.
But - it's not real life. It is, however, an immersive role play environment. Tell me that, if you're any good at role playing at all, that you haven't sometimes forgotten the lines between your character and reality. This used to happen a lot when we would do pencil and paper role playing games - your imagination would get going and the words would start flying the more you got into the game. There are a lot of times that I find myself talking as I'm typing while playing this game - I also consider myself a darned good role player, too, and once I assume the persona - I'm there. (I was cursing up a storm last night off screen while my freelancer was trying to avoid the Gallic Navy fighters that suddenly were hostile to him - damn Frogs...)
You can - or should - be able to tell when someone is being in RP and making comments and when they're being personal. If you can't - then PM the player that's making the comment and say, Hey, I'd appreciate it if you'd tone it down a bit.
In my opinion there are 2 types of racial insults, the insults regarding skin color, religion,... and the ones used in most jokes regarding stereo-types.
Example of the stereo-type thing:
people from scotland only wear skirts (or whatever they are called)
or all americans are cowboys
Now personaly i find that only those stereo-type "insults" should be used here on discovery because when you use these, everyone will most likely know right away that you aren't serious, but if you start using words like **** of ******* (i thing everyone knows what i could be meaning with those) it can be hard for others to know if you are joking or not.
