If you two are using the same copy of the game, there might be a security issue, but I'm not sure, also If your trying to connect through a school Internet, there picky about what you can and cannot do.

Fortunately for alot of people there are no security issues with using the same copy of the game, however unfortunate for Microsoft.

Odds are if you are at a school connecting through their internet, they have the ports used for Freelancer blocked.

90% of the time a school will have all ports blocked except neccessary ones for browsing the internet. Your best solution would probrably be to get ahold of the school IT Manager and request that he unlock the ports for your computer.

If you have any control over your router you can add these ports to set permissions:

Hosting: UDP ports 2302-2304

Also try this site for ports on games.
