As my personal practice has shown, if you are really looking for a middle ground between free cargo space space and hull durability, then HAU4 will be quite enough. And CAU6 in turn is really suitable for frigates (Salvager, Raba, Scarab), I think, that have offensive potential. A-and don't be damn cheapskates – mount at least UAU on your trains.
