There is a new mod manager out.

Freelancer Mod Manager 1.4 Beta 4
http://home.comcast.net/~igx89/FLMMInsta..._beta4.exe

And there are many new features in the manager, including, 7z format support.

7z is one of the best compressing formats there is. It would better to use 7z on the mod file instead of ZIP. Because I know there is quite a few user on Discovery who are still on dial up connections.

I did a test to see the size difference between ZIP and 7z on the latest mod files, results are:

ZIP Size: 31,748 kb ( 31.7mb )

7z Size: 23,104 kb ( 23.1mb )

That is a huge difference, and this would be very helpful for everyone on dial up and people with slow DSL *cough* Me *cough*. Also would save lots of bandwidth for the site.

The program I used to do this test was PowerArchiver.

Program is rated safe by Softpedia.com

Not a free program, but if you want a free one you can use 7-zip.

Also rated safe and awarded 4 stars by Softpedia.com

So anyway there is my little idea trying to help make Discovery better. What do you think?

That would speed up the download of Discovery Mod by a lot! SWEET!

Not many people have FLMM 1.4 beta 4, so I cannot release *only* 1.4 version. However, Discovery proved to be fully compatible with new mod manager, so I will release a smaller 7zip version for those who already got the new FLMM version.

Not that I recommend it for everyone, since 1.4 is yet a beta and it has certain minor glitches.

7zip which I used to create the archive produced a 21,2 Mb file, which is about 2/3 of Discovery zipped size. Once again, FLMM 1.3 WILL NOT open it.

I know 1.3 does not accept 7z files. But you could also just ask everyone to upgrade. Its a small download and only takes 2 minutes to setup everything.

I'm not going to ask everyone to upgrade. FLMM 1.3 is still standart, everyone's got it, in our community and outside. 1.4 isn't even on TLR.

Besides which, zip is much more convenient for testing. WinRAR creates a Zip archive of all Discovery files (102 mb unpacked) in 10 seconds, and 7Zip archive takes around 2 minutes with maximum compression.
