The Umiu Maru is a Peregrine civilian frigate procured from the Zoners on the open market in 830 AS. Subsequently transferred to Niigata Star City in the Sigma-59 system, Guild engineers undertook works on the hull's internal power, weaponry and engine systems to bring them in line with GMG standards.

As a frigate, the Umiu Maru is suited to cargo interdiction and retrieval operations in the Sigma Systems, as well as acting as a hardened transport when expecting to traverse hostile space or haul particularly sensitive goods. The ship's generous power capacity also lends itself to the effective launching of Annihilator torpedoes, incorporating an auxiliary role of medium-range missile support against larger, harder targets into its repertoire.
