♦ Mission: Mysterious Disappearances

♦ Mission Provider: Mystery Contact
♦ Type: Investigation
♦ Repetition: This mission can be completed three times. [Once per individual player or group of players] [2 completions remaining]
♦ Offered Reward: 100'000 credits for discovering the cause of the disappearances [+ 150'000 bonus for each unique discovery.]
♦ Difficulty: Easy

♦ Description: There have been various reports of vessels disappearing near the center of the Guerrero Asteroid Cloud in Vespucci. Scout vessels trying to find out where these ships have gone have thus far come back empty handed, if they came back at all. Something peculiar is going on near the center of the Guerrero Asteroid Cloud and it's your job to figure out what.

Find out what's in the center of that cloud, the more information you bring back the better. We don't expect any hostiles, they would have been detected by now, but there's definitely something fishy going on.

In addition to the initial payment a bonus will be provided per unique discovery you make while exploring the center of the cloud.

Godspeed out there pilot.

I'm an infrequent visitor to Vespucci, and I have some hazardous astrogation experience, so I gave this a shot. I've got a lead for you.

Because of the field's dicey reputation and the overall lawlessness of Vespucci, I picked up a freelancer - callsign Blackguard - for protection while I ran a sector-by-sector sweep of the Guerrero. I cut our search pattern short once we stumbled into something plausible as your culprit.

The primary suspect: an unmarked jump hole located near the boundary of Sectors Delta and Echo 7. See the attached scans. Also found and noted are the positions of a number of derelicts, as follows:

  1. Battlecruiser Triton, Sector Charlie 6 - A Liberty relic from the Vespucci campaign. Not of consequence to the mission by my judgement.

  2. Avarice, Sector Echo/Foxtrot 6 - A Junker CSV. In rough condition. Some components have been sheared from the hull, but there's no sign of any loose debris matching the ship in its vicinity. Either it's been there for quite some time and it's all drifted apart, or the hull was towed there.

  3. Interlocutor, Sector REDACTED - A Prosecutor in good condition. The same can't be said for the pilot. Circumstances suggested they laid themselves to rest there voluntarily. Out of respect for the dead, I hope you don't mind that I'm keeping the location private.

Phase alignment of the jump hole was weak and the jump tunnel was undoubtedly unstable, but possible to pass through safely with our small craft. We marked our position and proceeded on.

Following a clean traversal, we were cut off from the Nav-Net, but the nebular composition suggested we were still in the Walker, and within a very large asteroidal cavern. We surely weren't the first through here. The entire cavity's strewn with wrecked craft.

Here are the scans, though, some of these derelicts are exceptionally old. On the order of several centuries, in at least one case.

I'll leave it up to the client whether any of these match who they counted missing.

A second unstable jump hole at the other end of the passage, upon traversal, leads to the Omega-7 system further into the Walker Nebula. Unknown bypasses like these are favorites of daredevil smugglers, which explains some of the wreckage. We doubled back through the passage into Vespucci, and out of the Guerrero to complete our mission.

A word of caution, though. We were warned off intruding in the Guerrero by a Gaian patrol, and we tagged sensor ghosts on our scanners during the initial sweep shadowing us at maximum range. When you take into account the damage inflicted on the ships inside that cavern passage, and the way that Junker ship was seemingly moved with intention, it all starts to seem a little ominous. Spacers have disappeared through unstable jump holes before, but... I wouldn't recommend sending in any other scouts lightly.

Forward the payout to Red.Dandelion. The freelancer and I agreed on his final payment separately.

♦ Mission Update

Color us impressed, the client had all but given up hope anyone would be brave enough to investigate this matter let alone find a plausible explanation for these sudden dissapearances after all this time. Unfortunately it seems the scans from after your jump were corrupted in your transfer, could you transmit them again? The client will surely be very interested in your findings.

I've got my reasons. The credits certainly help.

I'm sending the data now.

♦ Mission: Completed

Scans have been received, as expected the client is very pleased, well done. The credits have been wired to your account, you will find a sizeable bonus thanks to your thorough investigation. Additionally the client has provided a special engine as a token of their appreciation, intermediaries will be in touch to help deliver it to you. Should you speak with your Freelancer friend, the client is also very interested in their point of view on these discoveries, some extra credits might be in it for them as well.

God speed out there.
