ALL INCIDENTS AND CASUALTIES RELATED TO EXPEDITION
AUTHOR: JIMMY MANDERSON
FOR READ ONLY

INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION

All of the listed files relate to the events of the Expedition, specifically who died and how. Some of the files represent physical deaths. The other (and largest) portion relates to the so-called Psychosis. You can read more about this in the attachments below.

I'll add that this file is being compiled for the Brigade's personal use and should not be released outside our archives. At least, that's the intention. If we provide data to third parties, it will be in printed form and will not leave the cruiser Hades. Overwatch has been keeping all of this information for a long time, and we shouldn't have it on our hands at all. But since we were there and have experience, we must have this information. This is the decision of Helson, myself, and a number of others, some of whom died during the Expedition.

In memory of them, we must not only remember all of this, but also be able to resist.

Terminology for understanding:
  • Psychosis - A mental infection that leads to the most negative consequences. This includes attempts at any kind of violence against oneself or others, including sacrifice. Each case in which 1-2 people participated is marked.
  • Flash - A mass Psychosis of the most destructive nature. Typically, three or more people are involved.
  • Physical - Deaths from exposure to anomalies, radiation, and other natural or artificial factors of space. Throughout the entire Expedition, physical deaths never intersected with cases of Psychosis. Perhaps the most humane thing that could have happened during the Expedition.

Case number: #1-833-C1
Date: 14/12/833
Category: Psychosis
Persons/units involved:
Ensign Chris Hartley & Lieutenant Quinn Santos, 351st Wing.

Details: At 16:17, the 34th Brigade arrived in the "Abyss-7" system and plotted a course for the suspected hyperspace jump source at the other end of the system. A massive asteroid field, similar in structure to those found in the Tau-23 system, blocked the unit's path. A brief analysis revealed the presence of beryllium deposits with gradually increasing radiation levels. This prevented the Brigade from detecting objects further than 5K.

No foreign objects were detected. The unit's personnel were divided into several groups to slowly advance and plot the most convenient route. Ensign Chris Harley and Lieutenant Quinn Santos of the 351st Wing were assigned to Group 5. The distance between them and the flagship, the CV-Hades, was 3.2K, according to the entire expeditionary group's field of view. The first Psychosis incident occurred at 16:45. The conversations are being recorded.

5-1: 5-1 to One.
One: One is is listening.
5-1: Flight report - no any suspicious signatures were recorded, moving further, coordinates set. Over.
One: Understood, 5-1, over.
5-1: 5-1 to One, changing data right now. We've got hostile signatures right near us. Nomad ships. We request immediate support!
5-2: 5-2 confirms, enemy ships have been spotted. Engaging!
One: 5-1, retreat immediately to Group-Six, the remaining units have been notified of enemy ships in the system. Do you copy?
6-1: Group-Six to One, we don't see any enemy signatures near 5-1 and 5-2. We are waiting for their retreat or an order to intervene.
One: Stand down, Group-Six, do not engage. Group-Five, return to formation immediately for assistance. Do you copy?
5-1: Group-Five to One, we still need help, hull got an heavy damage, reactor almost destroyed!
One: We see you performing combat maneuvers in relation to each other, 5-1 and 5-2. Get back in line immediately!
6-1: They do what?
5-2: Somebody help us, damn it, why the fuck we should deal with these Nomads on our own?!
One: All active escort and reconnaissance groups are to stay away from battle site 5-2 and 5-1. Attempts to disobey orders will be considered treason!
6-1: 6-1 to One, We're requesting data on battlefields 5-1 and 5-2. Are enemy Nomad signatures visible there?
One: We don't see any signatures at all. We have a clear picture of 5-1 and 5-2, both ships are engaged in combat.

Note: Group-Six really couldn't get a clear picture of what was happening with 5-2 and 5-1. Meanwhile, Hades was pre-equipped with more powerful sensor systems suited to the negative environment, allowing for battlefield analysis at a range of 5K. Therefore, it saw everything.

5-1: They're going to shoot us down now... Damn... I'm going to ram, over! Do you copy?! I'm going to ram.
5-2: 5-2 to One, got heavy damage on my ship. Cannot escape or even eject. Going to ram hostile target. Wish you luck guys. Over.

Following the transmissions, 5-1 and 5-2, known as Lieutenant Quinn Santos and Ensign Chris Hartley, performed a ramming maneuver. A visual explosion, visible from a distance of 3.2K, as well as the disappearance of two signatures from CV-Hades sensors, indicated that the two ships had collided. Analysis of the ships maneuvers also suggested that no Nomads were in the vicinity, and that the two pilots of the 351st Wing had engaged each other.

Group-Six, led by Commander Tim Smith, volunteered to verify the location of the incident (as they were the closest). CV-Hades had previously verified the sensor range of Group-Six and received a figure of 2K. The decision was made to dispatch Group-Six to the incident site, provided that all formation members were within 2.5K of each other. The group also received direct orders to make an abrupt stop in the event of any suspicious activity.

Further negotiations are recorded.

6-1: 6-1 to One, Group-Six is ready for provide search mission. All ships is on range out of scanners of each other.
One: We've verified the distance between your ships. On average, it's 2.6K between each of you. CV-Hades can still see you. Requesting confirmation of the lack of visual information about your group members, 6-1.
6-1: 6-1 to One, no visual data of my group members. Over.
6-2: 6-2 to One, no visual data of my group members. Over.
6-3: 6-3 to One, no visual data of my group members. Over.
One: Received, Group-Six. Cleared to proceed toward the incident zone. We will advise you personally of any potential encounters between group members. Speed limit: 30 m/s. All group members are requested to enter radio silence mode and communicate only on the individual frequency with CV-Hades. Do you copy?
6-1: Understood, One. Radio frequency changed.
6-2: 6-2 to One, frequency changed. Can hear you and only you now.
6-3: 6-3 to One, frequency changed. No any messages of other members of Group-Six. Awaiting for your instructions.
One (simultaneously to all members of the group): Start moving.

Note: We assumed it all this way. If the group members couldn't see each other, they wouldn't be able to engage in combat. Someone would also obviously be outside the range of the supposed source of the mental infection. We would have to move on anyway, and the anomaly was right in our path. We had to take risks.

6-2: 6-2 to One, engines stopped, got visual contact. I stumbled upon it by accident, but I'm not going any further.
One: One to Group-Six, cut your engines immediately!
6-1: 6-1 to One, engines are turned off.
6-3: 6-3 to One, engines are turned off.
One: 6-2, the estimated range of source still about 1.2K away. What do you see? Can you send it to us?
6-2: Yes One. I'll try. Photo sent. Awaiting further orders. Over.

A photograph of the object appeared on board CV-Hades at 17:40. The object was located 1.2K from 6-2 and consisted of a small structure resembling two spearheads joined together. Due to radiation interference, a more accurate image was not possible.

Group-Six was ordered to return to their original position. The return was uneventful. The entire expedition team was ordered to maintain a distance of 1.5K from the unknown object. After lengthy discussions, it was noted that the high background radiation prevented 5-1 and 5-2 from seeing anything further than 500 meters, and the density of the asteroids precluded visual contact with the source.

Group-Six was assigned to replace Group-Five. The expedition resumed its journey at precisely 18:00. Three hours later, at 21:44 expeditionary group reached the jump hole to the next system, "Abyss-8".

Case number: #1-833-C2
Date: 11/01/834
Category: Psychosis
Persons/units involved:
Lieutenant Tyler Meser, 341st Wing.

Details: While crossing the "Abyss-9" system, the Expeditionary Group made a 24-hour rest stop to discuss future plans and allow the personnel to rest after "Abyss-8". Lieutenant Tyler Meser was aboard the CV-Hades, resting in accordance with the Order's regulations on personnel rest.

At 12:40, on the eve of his new shift, Tyler went to see scientist Alexandra Sergeeva to clarify the details of his next mission.

Clarification: Tyler and Alexandra had been friends for about a year.

At 12:43, Tyler met with Alexandra. During the conversation, Alexandra provided him with several photographs of objects in "Abyss-8", which were identical in appearance to the objects in "Abyss-7". The images of each of them were also distorted by background radiation. According to the Order's statutory regulations, there were no restrictions on this conversation.

At 12:55, Tyler returned to his quarters and began preparing for his 24-hour shift. At 13:00, he headed to the hangar where his Anubis-class fighter was located, climbed into the cockpit, and spent about five minutes there. According to CCTV footage, he was making some kind of recording. At 13:05, he pulled a laser pistol from his holster and leaved cockpit.

Three infantrymen from the CV-Hades were also in the hangar, conducting a search of the hangar. Noticing Tyler with a loaded weapon, they ordered him to stop. Further conversations are being recorded.

2-3: Jed Romero

2-3: Hey, Tyler, hold on. Why do you have that pistol armed and loaded?
T: Fuck off Jed. Don't you see?
2-3: See what?
2-1: Tyler, hands up. Now.
T: Fuck off you too!
Tyler points his gun at his head
2-2: Damn it, Tyler, what the hell?!
2-1: 2-1 to 1-1, we've got situation here. Hangar. A suspect with signs of mental illness has been located. We're keeping him in our sights, requesting backup, and are ready to fire.
1-1: Already on the way. Take measures to detain him.
Group start moving slowly to Tyler Meser
2-3: Tyler, do not be that stupid. Drop the gun, buddy, we'll help you.
2-2: Hey, mate, Jed ain't joking. Do not make such moves. Just drop the gun or we'll do what we should do.
T: We are being watched. Every step we take. We are not here for nothing.
Tyler takes a shot
2-2: OH FUCK!
2-3: SHIT!
2-1: 2-1 to 1-1, suspect killed himself. Do you copy? Suspect killed himself. We request the immediate arrival of a rescue team!
1-1: He did what?! Yes, sure, rescue team is on the way. We almost in hangar. Over.

Immediately after the incident, a patrol was dispatched to Alexandra Sergeeva's office, where she was detained and interrogated. She listed every action she had taken, including photographs of objects in "Abyss-8." All photographs were immediately confiscated and Commander Jacob Meser was notified of his brother's death.

The theory was that Tyler saw something in the photographs, which prompted him to commit suicide in front of the patrol officers. A note was found during a search of his cockpit. According to the text on it, Tyler continued to resist the negative influence for some time.

Tyler Meser Wrote:"I just got into the ship's cockpit, and this crap started filling my head. CHECK PHOTaAAdasedawe1DA1910"

Jimmy Manderson Wrote:"For some reason, the photographs didn't have a negative impact on Alexandra. Apparently, she simply didn't notice what Tyler saw. Or maybe she just hadn't noticed it yet, and the patrol team got ahead of her curiosity. She was incredibly lucky."

Because of this incident, all subsequent photos are taken with a pre-set effect: "Motion Blur". The effect was pre-installed on each ship's camera, and attempts to alter its effect on the image were considered a sign of infection.

Case number: #1-833-C4
Date: 05/04/834
Category: Physical
Persons/units involved:
Commandant Clotilda Sorg, 341st Wing.

Details: On April 5, 835 A.S., the 34th Brigade's Expeditionary group successfully jumped into the "Abyss-12" system. As expected after "Abyss-11", the system contained several Daam-K'Vosh traps similar to those the unit had seen previously. After an hour of plotting a route, the entire team moved forward, gathering data on the system. The artifact obtained in "Abyss-10" allowed them to initiate the gate activation process, which had previously allowed them to enter "Abyss-11". As for exiting "Abyss-12", due to limited visibility (dark matter clouds), they had to determine the location of the next hyperspace gate.

At 15:43, 34th Brigade made a brief stop to consult maps and then proceeded to the two remaining checkpoints. It was believed that one of them was the gate.

Having reached their destination, Commandant Clotilda Sorg and several other pilots from the 341st Wing headed to the designated point. Freighter SD-Runner was moving behind the group, preparing to launch probes. According to formation, Clotilda was flying ahead. At 17:01, the incident occurred that resulted in her death.

Further communications are being recorded.

Black box data Wrote:One: CV-Hades
1-1: Clotilda Sorg
1-2: Andry Scott
1-3: August Johnson
1-4: SD-Runner
2-1: Jacob Meser

1-1: 1-1 to One. We're almost reached structure. Ja, looks like the gates. Safe range set, ordering all Group-One members to cut their engines.
One: Copy that, 1-1. There same job we have to do as in previous system. Over.
1-1: Aha. Group-One, safe point set. Cut engines when reach it. Stay in formation, do not divide.
1-2: 1-2 to 1-1, safe point reached, engines off. Over.
1-3: 1-3 to 1-1, safe point reached, engines off. Over.
1-4: SD-Runner to 1-1, safe point reached, we're stopped. Preparing for launch the probes. Do you copy?
1-1: Ja, we'll keep eyes open. Over.

Probes are launched towards the gate. No any reaction.

One: 1-4, we're receiving data from the probes. Yes, this is the gate. Activate the artifact when you're ready.
1-4: Copy that, Hades. Starting the process.

A powerful cannon-like weapon emerges from SD-Runner compartment. Moments later, a purple beam erupts from it, aimed directly at the gate.

1-1: Not THAT close, 1-4!
1-4: Apologies. Activation will end in 10 seconds.

Ten seconds later, the beam's connection to the gate was reset as is typical for its launch. The runner could no longer fire due to the artifact's design. The gate still didn't respond.

1-4: SD-Runner to One, no any reaction. Gates doesn't launch. And we cannot shoot it again.
One: Understood, Runner. Get out of there, get back into line. 1-1, same order to you. Do you copy?
1-1: Ja-ja, Hades. Going back.

The group returns to formation. Flashes of light and lightning begin to flicker around the gate. Suddenly, a singularity appears, causing no damage to the structure but sucking in all nearby objects. Among these objects is Clotilda Sorg's ship.

The anomaly was a gravitational vortex. Probes caught in it were stretched and torn apart, their fragments flying in all directions at incredible speed.

1-4: Gravitation! Cruise speed, now!
1-3: Fuck, cruising. Andry, running?
1-2: Already on it! See Runner getting out of it. 1-1... Ah, damn it, Clotilda, ma'am, how are you?
1-4: Drones, drones, look! That thing just annihilated them!
1-2: Holy fuck.
1-1: It draws me in! Cannot get out! Starting emergency cruise speed!

Note: Clotilda's ship had a unique design and was equipped with spare engines to increase cruising speed. Their power was sufficient to double the speed, but the fuel supply only lasted for an five minutes.

© Jimmy Manderson

1-1: I can't! The countdown has begun. I have 4 minutes and 48 seconds left!
One: One to 1-1, we'll try figure out something. Give us a minute.

Not mentioned in the blackbox: Hades's crew was quickly trying to find a solution. The most obvious was to strengthen the cruiser's tractor beam and direct it at Clotilda's ship.

1-1: There is not enough speed, I am gradually getting drawn in. 4 minutes and 4 seconds left!
One: Let's try, 1-1. Disable all engine overheating safety systems. With your superstructure, your ship will last for five minutes. But this is your chance. Do it right now.
1-1: Done. Now I'm just frozen in place. I can already feel the warmth coming on.
One: One to 1-1, we'll try use our tractor beam now, so you'll be able to get out. Keep your ship level and do not make any movements.
1-1: Come on, One, do it!

CV-Hades approached the 1-1, preparing to use the beam. At some point, gravity began to affect the cruiser as well, and the reverse thrusters were activated. Cruiser began to move away at a speed of 1 m/s.

The tractor beam was then deployed, with all available power turned on. The attempt was unsuccessful: at first, the ship was pulled toward Hades, but then the wormhole's gravity intensified, pulling Clotilda deeper until the beam was deactivated.

1-2: This thing won't let go. If you held on any longer, One, gravity would suck us all in.
One: 1-1, it didn't worked. Report your status.
1-1: Doing good. Still waiting for any solution possible. 2 minutes and 58 seconds left!
2-1: 2-1 to 1-4, can you try re-activate your device? Maybe this thing has the opposite effect?
1-4: Negative 2-1, it just doesn't want even activate.
2-1: Fuck!

Note: The "device" refers to an elongated artifact, visually resembling a spearhead. From previous uses, we learned that the artifact recognizes when it can activate a given gate. Attempts to use it on an activated gate yielded no effect. We were also unable to circumvent this limitation. The device was lost after Incident #1-833-C9.

© Jimmy Manderson

2-1: 2-1 to One, let's just destroy that thing!
One: Guns pointed, we're already on it, 2-1. All ships are to maintain their distance.

The released plasma charges followed the desired trajectory until they crossed the event horizon, after which they headed straight for the anomaly and dissolved within it. 2-1 took the initiative to bypass the anomaly and attack the structure located between the anomaly and his ship. 1-4 also participated alongside 2-1, arming probes with antimatter explosives. Other Brigade pilots approached from other flanks and engaged the structure with crossfire. All key elements thought to be able to maintain the anomaly in a singular state were destroyed. However, this had no negative impact on the anomaly itself. It continued to exist.

The resulting debris was caught in a gravitational vortex, shattering into small pieces in all directions. The high velocity caused significant damage to several ships.

2-1: Fuck that! 2-1 to One, anomaly status?
One: No effect. It still exists.
1-1: 2 minutes.
One: We have no other ideas, 1-1. We can't release the cable; it's too risky. There's a high chance the cable will hit your ship and tear it apart before the anomaly does.
1-1: Ja-ja, I understand that. We have no other ideas. It seems I was wrong to fly ahead of everyone else.
2-1: What do you mean, Clotilda?
1-1: You know what, Jacob. Looks like you'll have to become the next Commandant. Sorry, One, but this is where we part ways.
One: What are you planning, 1-1?
1-1: Die earlier than this thing will destroy me. Jacob Meser, I hereby appoint you to my position as Commandant of the 34th Brigade. 1-1 to One, I relinquish my powers as Commandant-
2-1: Wait, what?! You cannot give up just like that Clotilda! Let us think for more, maybe we'll figure out what to do!
1-1: Screw that, Jac! We've tried everything! There's no point. You're better off moving on without me.

Cockpit camera 1-1 showed the pilot pulling his pistol from its holster and placing it under his chin.

1-1: So... Yeah... That was great run. Sorry, Hades. I have no choice left-
2-1: Clotilda, don't you dare do this! Don't even try! As the newly elected Commandant, I order you not to do this!
1-1: You can't save me. It's useless. And I don't want to die from this crap either. I'll do it myself. I know you won't shoot. None of you will.
2-1: Clotilda, no! I order you!
1-1: Two minutes' worth of fuel, Jacob. Not even a minute. You won't have time to think of anything.
2-1: Clotilda, don't fucking dare do this! I love you, do you hear me?! I love you very much and I don't want to lose you after Tyler. I'm sorry I was such an asshole and didn't ask you to go on date! Just wait a little while, we can save you! Let us think of something!
1-1: I love you too, fool. I'm an idiot too. I should have realized what was going on right away. We were both countering each other. It's been a pleasure serving with you, my gang. Adam, I'm handing over my authority to Jacob. Move on. My journey ends here.
One: Understood 1-1. Been a pleasure serving with you too. Do it.
1-1: Ja, sure... I know.
2-1: Adam, no!

Clotilda shoots herself in the head. 34th|Tau-1 continues its cruiser burn maneuver for about ten seconds before being sucked into the gravitational anomaly. Hit by the center, the ship stretches and tears apart. Later, camera analysis revealed that Clotilda's body had also been torn apart.

The anomaly ceased to exist an hour later. Further analysis of the system revealed a second such structure. Following enhanced security measures, the device was reactivated, and this time the gate opened, providing access to the next system. Footage of what happened to Clotilda's body was not shown to Jacob Meser, to avoid further psychological trauma.

Date: 05/07/834
Category: Flash
Persons/units involved:
343rd Wing

Details: On 26/06/834 A.S. at 10:14, CV-Hades control has issued a command to the 343rd Wing (from here on - Delta) to conduct a preliminary survey of Daam-K'Vosh structure, a hyperspace connection to which has been confirmed to be located in the "Abyss-32" System. Interceptor units Delta-3 and Delta-4 (from here on - 7-3 and 7-4) have breached the formation by the order of Delta Leader (from here on - 7-1) and entered "Abyss-32" to confirm the lack or presence of hostiles. Delta-2, Delta-5, Delta-6, Delta-7 and Delta-8 (from here on - 7-2, 7-5, 7-6, 7-7 and 7-8) have retained the formation with 7-1.

At 10:27, contact with 7-3 and 7-4 was lost. Leader and the remaining Delta proceeded into "Abyss-32". Circumstances of events that transpired afterwards are unclear.

On 04/07/834 A.S., at 22:03, wreckage of 7-7 has been located twenty clicks away from the entry point into "Abyss-31". Circumstances of its reappearance are unclear. The ship itself suffered severe tearing and internal combustion damage, likely caused by being quite literally "torn to shreds while being compressed" by unsafe hyperspace traversal. 7-7 was found deceased in the cockpit of the ship. Following the autopsy, the cause of death was determined as "brain hemorrhage". It is unsure if the hemorrhage was caused by unsafe hyperspace traversal or by other effects.

Black Box readings recovered from 7-7 were severely corrupted with just a few sections retaining their structure.

Case number: #1-833-C7
Date: 12/05/834
Category: Psychosis
Persons/units involved:
Scientist Alexandra Sergeeva

Details: On May 12, a scientist of the 34th Brigade, Alexandra Sergeeva, failed to show up for the morning roll call aboard the "SD-Observer" (Corvo-class ship). Roll call was scheduled for 6:00 AM, according to the workday schedule. At 6:05 AM, a crew member went to her cabin and discovered her dead. The cause of death was slashing her veins.

An autopsy revealed no evidence of drug or alcohol intoxication. Alexandra also had not committed any suspicious behavior prior to her suicide. A review of CCTV cameras revealed no cases of psychosis or infection transmission from ship crew members.

Based on previous incidents, a full-scale search of Alexandra's cabin and work area was conducted, during which all photo and video footage was checked for the "Motion Blur" effect. All footage was filmed using this effect, and therefore it was decided not to transfer it to the quarantine unit of the cruiser "Hades." An additional interrogation of the Observer's crew revealed that Alexandra was engrossed in determining the causes of the mental infection within the ranks of the 34th Brigade. A review of Alexandra's recent requests aboard the cruiser for materials from other ships, as well as her conversations with other researchers, confirmed this theory, which is now considered the only true and accurate one.

Clarification (1): Any video or photo with this effect is marked accordingly, which is only applied when the effect is activated. With additional adjustments, it was possible to ensure that any unauthorized attempt to disable the effect would be immediately transmitted directly to the cruiser Hades.

During a search of the cabin and work area, various notes were found, the handwriting of which matched Alexandra's. All the notes related to the scientist's work and personal life matters throughout the expedition.

Clarification (2): On February 6, 834 A.S, all scientific personnel were transferred from the cruiser Hades to Scientific ships to prevent accidental transfer of contaminated materials. Infantry units were also prohibited from interacting with scientific personnel, except in cases requiring protection or termination due to a Psychosis/Flashes.

All entries for 1 month before her death are entered into the journal.

Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"I'm still reeling from what happened to the 342nd Wing. So many deaths have occurred throughout the Expedition that I'm tired of reading these reports. We're trying to find a solution, and it feels like we're going in circles."

Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"Today Derek gave me a photograph. He gave it to me straight away. Out of habit, I closed my eyes to avoid seeing anything out of the ordinary, and only then carefully took it, folding it in half. He looked at me and asked, "Don't you trust me?"

Then he spent the whole day looking sullen, as if I'd touched something sensitive. Finally, I decided to run the photo through the scanner and apply the "Blur" effect. Even with that effect, it was clear it was a landscape from the planet Denver. I remember that only K'Vosh structures can infect, so I opened the photo. It's not that I didn't want to say it, but I was sure Derek was fine. I just acted that way out of habit, as if I'd been programmed.

Yes, it was just a landscape. He often talked about Denver to me personally and said he dreamed of returning there as a free man.

I'm such a fool... I need to apologize tomorrow."

Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"I decided to check the maps we compiled during the Expedition. I submitted a request to Hades. Jimmy forwarded the map to me and said it contained literally all the notes I was looking for. He wrote that: "There's literally everything so do not ask me 2, 3 or more times that there's something missing. If you missed something - look twice."

Asshole. You're not the only one who's fucking tired about this whole thing, cyka."
[+]25.04.834
Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"I checked all the maps. The systems we visited are laid out strangely. Basically, it's as if we're floating along the edge, periodically venturing deeper. Even the structures become more numerous, then fewer, and some even repeat. And here's the interesting thing.

The gate that was the trap that tore Clotilda apart, if it were operational, would have led directly into the depths. It's as if something wants to keep us out. Messaged to Koji it would be interesting to hear his point of view."

Added that same day: "Koji responded almost immediately and said he'd been thinking about it himself from time to time. We agreed to meet the day after tomorrow. Helson allowed."

Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"Today was our day off. We stopped for a break, giving everyone time to get ready and do something other than the Expedition. I tidied up wherever I could. Derek asked me out that very evening. I accepted. What am I even thinking? I don't know, like I need to do it before it's too late. Well, I was told Jacob was incredibly upset about Clotilda's death. And this was after the death of his brother, Tyler. Adam imposed a strict ban on any personal relationships during the Expedition after that trap incident.

It's easy for you to say, you're a lone wolf, Captain. I'm sure if people dated, they'd at least feel more secure in this darkness."

Added that same day: "This night was magical."

Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"I met with Koji. I've already missed this old man who loves to mention his Home and lecture on its history. But everyone has their own quirks.

So, during the discussion, he explained that the entire Abyss is a single Daam-K'Vosh system, constructed by them for unknown purposes. He also pointed out that among all these structures, nothing habitable was found. Based on Dr. Sinclair's work, Daam-K'Vosh had what we're accustomed to calling "habitation."

But here, there's none of that. The structures simply exist. We discussed the enormous amount of radio interference when we fly into areas with numerous structures. It's like some kind of passive electronic warfare system that isn't fully operational... For some reason.

I told him that the gate that killed Clotilda was actually functional. It seemed the system simply blocked us from entering. And, most surprisingly, he agreed with this and showed me a map with his own markings. And then my jaw dropped: we'd literally avoided several more such traps after Clotilda's death. Moreover, Koji himself set the course and told us where the Brigade shouldn't poke its nose during the flight. He said that after all this time, he'd gotten a damn good sense of the Abyss and understood what was going on. But not completely.

Oh, right, I forgot to mention: I asked him to extract all the Psychosis and Flash cases from database so I could analyze them and establish connections. Koji brought them to me and asked what exactly I wanted to see in all of this. I said I didn't know yet, but it felt like I was close to solving the Psychosis in the Brigade. He hinted that Victor was working on it, and I shouldn't take his job away from him, to which I replied that Victor had given everyone a signal about how things worked, but to dig deeper, a brain alone wouldn't be enough in this situation."
[+]31.04.834
Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"Another case of Psychosis was reported today. An ensign from the 351st Wing. He was found hanged. The entire room was covered in some surreal crap. They sent me photos. The only thing I can see is "GOD HAS COME."

And we're in "Abyss-28." Moreover, he hanged himself about 20 minutes after we entered this system. Oh, and his veins were cut. The guy simply went crazy out of nowhere because he had no suspicious photos or videos. The crew was also urgently checked. Nothing was found."
[+]02.05.834
Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"I think I figured it out. I'll write later when everything's ready. So far, my guess is that the Psychosis can spread passively. That is, you can be infected with this crap without even realizing it. All that remains is to activate you at the right time, place, and moment.

I told Victor and Koji about this. They both told me they had similar thoughts. Victor also said he's been thinking for a month about the characteristics of passive carriers of the infection. As it turns out, from his observations, these carriers don't do anything special at all. And here's the scary shit. That Ensign could have been passively infected before being activated. So my question is: Who or what activated him? Could there really be anything other than visual contact?"
[+]07.05.834
Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"Andrei and Jacob died. Fuck...

I met Derek today. I've never cried so much in my life. Andrei is my comrade from the Coalition, and I just feel sorry for Jacob. The guy didn't deserve all this crap.

Господи... Их то за что? ("God... Why did this happen to them?" - translated)"
[+]09.05.834
Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"I can't sleep normally for the second day. I'm trying to figure out what this psychosis thing is. Something's wrong here, and that's a fact. I feel like I'm close to it all... I need to start writing down my notes and double-check everything. There's a connection!"
[+]11.05.834
Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:"Yes, I understood that!"
[+]12.05.834
Alexanda Sergeeva Wrote:Added probably in night of 12.05.835: "These structures know about us. They've long since figured out everything about us, and who we are.

When we took our first step into the Abyss, everything was predetermined. What we see is the legacy of Daam-K'Vosh. It's the legacy of the Empire. These are literally THEIR worlds, created... For what? We haven't found any structures that could indicate their existence. We haven't found any evidence that they could have been here. That is, we haven't seen anything that would indicate anyone ever lived here.

Structures, structures, thousands of structures, each one of which DOESN'T DRIVE US CRAZY. Note that if we don't look at them, we're alive. We're perfectly fine. No voices in our heads, nothing at all that would allow them to penetrate our brains. We're literally making mistake after mistake, allowing them to penetrate our heads through our guys. All the madness happening around us is the result of someone making a mistake and allowing someone else to spread the infection.

They are studying us. Their methods are becoming more and more twisted, our every step is the exclusive favor of this SOMETHING that is watching us. The interference in the radio broadcasts isn't radiation, or faulty equipment; it's THEY whispering among themselves. Checking the maps, I realized they were leading us deeper, but not letting us go too far.

But there's something else. Who is behind all this? Even with all the security measures, despite all the attempts to bypass the infection, we continue to go mad. Someone is already walking among us, doing what they do. What if there are ten of them? What if there are a hundred? What if they are all of us, and the structures only needed access to our heads to take control at the right moment, at the right time and place?

Trust no one! Talk to no one! We could already be infected, every single one of us! I have to meet Adam. The expedition must end right now! Otherwise it will be too late!"

Added later: GOD HAS COME, GOD HAS COME, GOD HAS COME, GOD HAS COME, GOD HAS COME, GOD HAS COME, GODHASCOME, GODHASCOME, БОГПРИШЁЛБОГПРИШЁЛБОГПРИШЁЛБОГПРИШЁЛБОГПРИШЁЛ-

Further writing ceased. It is believed that Alexandra then committed suicide. Unlike the Psychosis case of April 31, 834 A.S., Alexandra left no other notes in her room except those written shortly before her death.

Adam Helson Wrote:"Do we have the slightest idea what kind of God we are talking about?"
Victor Bruno Wrote:"Best guess: We've gotten so close that "God" is contacting them personally.

Worst guess: Someone is so infected that they've managed not only to kill themselves or someone else, but also to secretly spread the infection, fully aware of what they're doing. The shittiest part of this whole thing, Adam, is that we won't know until the last moment."
Adam Helson Wrote:"I'll gather all commanders and we'll talk about ending of the Expedition."

On May 13, 834 A.S., an emergency meeting was held among the 34th Brigade's unit commanders to discuss aborting the Expedition and returning to the Sirius sector. After a lengthy discussion and weighing all arguments, the decision was made to continue.

Persons/units involved:
Lieutenant Robert Rios & Commander Tim Smith

Details: On March 4 at 10:50, Commander Tim Smith met with Lieutenant Robert Rios in the CV-Hades mess hall, where, according to eyewitnesses, they discussed the upcoming survey of the "Abyss-10" system, where the 34th Brigade had been stationed for two weeks, having arrived on February 21, 834 A.S.

Clarification: "Abyss-10" was a system with a vast number of structures, making the survey time-consuming. The study of the system began on February 21, 834 A.S. and was completed only on April 2, 834 A.S. It is still believed that this system was the most complex.

At 11:37, Tim Smith left the mess hall and headed to his cabin for rest. As the commander of the 411th Wing (disbanded at the time of the incident report), he had his own cabin, and the disbandment of the wing had no effect on his accommodations. At 11:40, Robert Rios also left the mess hall and headed to the 341st Wing's quarters, arriving there at 11:47. Ten minutes later, at 11:57, several people emerged from his quarters, namely:
  • Lieutenant Robert Rios;
  • Lieutenant Paul Abrams;
  • Ensign Anna Simonova;
  • Ensign Jared Robertson.

After this, the members of the above-mentioned group went to different duty stations, as part of the implementation of tasks according to the daily routine. Because of this, it was not possible to immediately label the group as infected. At 13:10, several members of the 351st Wing were heading to their quarters, which were located near quarters of the 341st Wing's members, but along a route that led near Tim Smith's cabin. At the same time, the above-mentioned members of the 341st Wing also headed to their quarters. Tim Smith was still in his cabin, sleeping, ready to go on night duty.

After noticing the suspicious movements of ten individuals, the cruiser's duty officer, Elder Auxiliary Mike Hammersen, notified Patrol Groups 4 and 5 of a suspected outbreak among the 34th Brigade personnel. Aspirant Jimm Nimes immediately arrived in the duty room, personally monitoring the movements of the suspicious individuals. When all the individuals' movements coincided and they were heading toward Tim Smith's cabin, Mike Hammersen raised the alarm on the ship, ordering Groups 4 and 5 to begin liquidation operations. Tim Smith was also awakened and notified of the infected approaching his cabin.

The alarm was raised at 13:23. Patrol Groups 4 and 5 began moving toward Tim Smith at 13:25. These groups were advised that the corridors would be sealed and that they would remain within them until reinforcements arrived. Nearby patrols were alerted to the outbreak and immediately moved toward the source of the infection.

Clarification: Mike Hammersen's timely response and initiative to raise the alarm are noteworthy, as the 34th Brigade had never encountered outbreaks before. This is the first documented case of such a widespread nature.

At 13:30, the infected team (hereafter referred to as Group 04-01) broke into Tim Smith's cabin using a compact explosive device, which destroyed the door locks. According to CCTV footage, approximately seven individuals entered the cabin without any resistance. It is believed that Tim Smith was stunned by the explosion and was unable to resist them at all. After this, some of the infected left Tim Smith's cabin, taking up positions near the enters of other rooms.

At 13:31, Patrol Groups 4 and 5 arrived on the scene and almost immediately engaged members of the 341st and 351st Wings. Further communications are being recorded.

Quote:Aspirant Jimm Nimes: 1-1
Elder Auxiliary Mike Hammersen: 1-2
Group 5 leader (Aspirant Constantin Gagnier): 5-1
Group 4 leader (Aspirant Swanhild Sander): 4-1
Elder Auxiliary Odilia Schuster: 5-2
Elder Auxiliary Guinevere Soucy: 4-2
Auxiliary Boris Osipov: 5-3
Auxiliary Nikolai Petrov: 5-4
Auxiliary Jo Tsutomu: 4-3

5-1: Group-5 to Two, we're on positions, see voices coming from the corridor. Ready for combat. Over.
1-2: Roger Five, Four what's your status?
4-1: Almost there, Two. Ja, we're here. Ready, we're ready, I repeat, we're ready!
1-1: Constantin, Swanhild, you both have green light to eliminate all of them. Do not look they're one of us.
5-1: Got it, sir, we'll do it. Four, are you ready?
4-1: Ready, Five, we're on opposite side of the corridor. We can see some of them taking defensive positions. Wait-

Sounds of shooting

4-3: 4-3 to Four and Five, they're started shooting.
5-1: Aha, perfect. Throw out the flashbangs, we'll start suppressive fire almost immediately after they go off.

Four flashbang grenades are heard. The groups begin assaulting the corridor, eliminating three men with crossfire.

5-1: Five to Two and Four, we've killed three of them. Keep moving.
1-1: On your right!

A shootout ensues. According to security footage, approximately four more people are firing from the entrances to their cabins.

5-4: Taking fire!
5-3: Keep looking at Tim's cabin, Kolya. Jo, Odillia, help me suppress them!
5-2: Ja, ja, shooting, trowing flashbang, keep moving!
4-3: Suppressing them, Boris, get closer so we can start an assault.
4-1: Everyone stop! Got an better idea.

Note: Many details were cut out of the negotiations, mostly due to the chaos of the shootout.

© Jimmy Manderson

All participants in the assault stop.

4-1: Four to One, can we just use explosives?
1-1: Could you clarify?
4-1: We have grenade launchers.
1-1: Tear them to pieces. Throw grenades into Tim Smith's cabin.
4-1: Aha, got it.

Members of groups 4 and 5 loaded barrel grenade launchers and fired at the defenders' positions. Since the doors to all other rooms were closed, and the space between the door and the corridor was insufficient to provide shelter from the grenade blasts, all the defenders were eliminated. Approaching Tim Smith's cabin, the assault teams threw seven grenades into the room.

5-1: Five to Two, One and Four, we've eliminated all of them. At least the ones who were in corridor. I'm not sure someone could survive seven grenades, so we can assault Smith's cabin. Over.
1-1: Five and Four, you've got green light for an assault, trow there some flashbangs to be sure. Everyone you see there, even Tim Smith, should be eliminated. Over.
5-1: Roger, going in.

After throwing three more flashbang grenades into the room, the teams stormed the area. As expected, the standard grenades killed the infected before standard weapons could. 4-1 then ordered his team to fire a final shot to the head of each infected.

After the situation was brought under control, the alert on Hades was lifted, and the corridor was cordoned off while an investigation was conducted. An inspection team led by Jimm Nimes conducted a full investigation of the scene and discovered that the infected from the 341st Wing, with the exception of Jared Robertson, had been in Tim Smith's wing and apparently committed suicide at the exact moment Group 4 and 5 launched their grenade launchers.

Tim Smith was also found in the cabin, murdered with a bladed weapon. His body had been dismembered, and blood was smeared all over the room. An examination was unable to determine the meaning of some of the symbols, but they were essentially all repeating and used the Daam-K'Vosh alphabet. During the translation, the meaning of the written words was established:

Inscriptions Wrote:MIND
MIND
MIND
MIND
MIND

The assault was completed at 1:45 PM. Remarkable was the speed with which the infected managed to carry out such a serious act of sabotage on the ship and kill the commander of the 411th Wing. Interviews with those in contact with the infected revealed no signs of infection.

A search of the quarters also revealed no records indicating prior infection among the eliminated individuals. At this point, the scenario was as follows:
  • Tim Smith contacts Robert Rios.
  • Robert Rios infects three more individuals from the 341st Wing.
  • Infected individuals disperse throughout the cruiser, infecting six more individuals from the 351st Wing.
  • Group 04-01 heads to Tim Smith's cabin to kill and sacrifice him.
  • As the assault on the cabin begins, some of the infected move to defend the approaches to Tim's body, while Robert Rios, Anna Simonova, and Paul Abrams dismember his body and write inscriptions.
  • As soon as Groups 4 and 5 eliminate the defenders, the aforementioned individuals commit suicide.

The investigation was completed on March 6, 834 A.S., after which new adjustments were made to the distribution of personnel on board all major ships of the 34th Brigade.

Victor Bruno Wrote:"This was the first outbreak of such a large scale. Returning to this document again and again, I suspect it wasn't Robert who was infected, but Tim. Something he said could have triggered the infection. We don't know what else was said that others might have overlooked.

Then we discovered that Robert and Tim were on the same exploratory mission in "Abyss-10", and in one of the shots, they passed by some fragment of the Daam-K'Vosh structure. If it was even a fragment. It doesn't matter, it was such a small thing that could have triggered this entire chain reaction. But who exactly received the madness, we don't know. Either one of them, or both at once.

The last option leads me to a disappointing conclusion. Tim had no intention of resisting, and Robert simply took nine more people with him to be slaughtered. If this is true, then these structures have a clear understanding of how to systematically destroy our personnel with our own hands, while attempting to mislead us and fall into their traps again and again."
