OVERVIEW
After the destruction of all viable Omicron Rho connections, the Core has ever sought an efficient way of moving the plunder of the Omicrons into House space. With no additional routes found despite rigorous explorer incentives, the original premise proposed by certain less-influential directors has finally been given the green light. Instead of relying on heavily defended long-range convoys, Omicron exporters would plan for a shorter trip, stopping at a key prepared location before proceeding into House space. With the Omegas heavily contested long before any similar ideas, the Sigma corridor began to take a more attractive appearance, despite the astronomical costs.
Alongside shareholders from all four Houses and their influence, the key partner is such an endeavor would always be the GMG. While House credits would more than adequately finance the construction, it would be the GMG who provided the local know-how, materiel, and security. With the ruins of Atka a grim reminder of the fate of any thinly-defended installation, local Core commanders have taken care to build rapport with the prickly gas miners, and have been rewarded with tacit cooperation. After all, investment in the Core's primary function is ever a chancy bet, but it becomes far more attractive when one may directly tip the scales in their favor.
Cooperation with the GMG secured by local Core interests could not have come at a better time. With the Kappa adventure definitively over for its human participants, the Corsairs have already looked towards their next conquest. Despite an even trade in capital assets in Gammu orbit, and the mauling of the Penitence during its daring retreat, the Imperio has never lacked for eager fighters willing to put any tools on hand to the making of war. Without the current ability to support large-scale operations in the Sigmas-17, the Corsairs have fallen back on a type of aggression they do best - commerce raiding against House-bound convoys. But this time, the focus of these rovers is not the bounties of Knossos, but the resources pouring into the new waystation on the Kusari border. The Corsairs have other plans for the Sigma corridor, and will try to continue the job the Outcasts so ironically started with Atka's destruction.
Behind the raiders, Freeport 9 will once again serve as a staging point for Corsair belligerence. The GMG must tighten their patrols and safeguard their investment, just as the Core pours resources and personnel into its new source of shareholder dividends. Both know that it is only a matter of time until the Corsairs make a serious attempt, regardless of how far away the nearest resupply may be. Even though the project is already "too big to fail" according to the more optimistic directors, any damage sustained by the depot would have to be made good by even more credits. More than one career, and no small amount of lives hangs in the balance of the upcoming conflict. Ultimately, only the efforts of the contracted haulers and engineers will make the biggest difference for the future of Bora Bora, but only if they are allowed to ply their trades in peace.
