Who are they?
Saboteurs, infiltrators, terrorists. “Wendigos” are agents controlled by the Vagrant mindshare. Inheriting that mindshare’s preference for subversion, persuasion, and manipulation over humanity, Wendigos are often found permeating human society to achieve their ends.
The Kushtaka (Kóoshdaa káa) represents a sub-faction within the broader Wendigo umbrella based out of Fort Leniex. Infected and enthralled alike, they are those broken or downtrodden souls who heard the Vagrant’s songs and, in their bonding, dreamt of vengeance and destruction.
Such desperation and anguish twist the soul, and in their union with a Vagrant incubus, their synthesis takes on a dark, malefic form. Rumours speak of the occasional aberrant product of such a merging, if such rumours ever make it out of Fort Leniex. Such beings are said to be culled, lest their song poison the chorus.
Their song is one of symbiosis achieved through parasitism: feeding upon Sirius’ dominant species until their kin are ready to take the reins.
What do they do? 1. The Carrion Call
Few in number and lacking in means, the Kushtaka actively partake in actions designed to acquire the resources they require while destabilising human society. False-flag raiding operations sow mistrust. Subversive interactions with lawful elements coerce and convert. Overt strikes sow chaos and panic.
2. A Dagger beneath every Cloak
The Kushtaka act as a coordination hub for those infiltrators willing to cooperate with them. Often isolated or cut off from regular communication, these infiltrators are provided with a degree of support and supply where possible. Crucially, the Kushtaka attempt to provide counter-espionage for the broader group, acting to protect the wider Wendigo population from the interference of those other than their kin.
3. The Ossein Maw
The Kushtaka are known to target spaceborne tourist traffic, stealing away passengers with as much vigour as the cargo found aboard such vessels. Few souls escape to tell such tales, and all wonder at the ill fate that befell those lost.
