What happened to making money?

Unfortunately for me, there are times when I may be away from gaming-contact for long enough to cost me my character. It's happened, probably 5 or 6 times in the 4 years I've been on this server. I have to start over. But in the past, even losing tens of millions, I knew where to start myself off to get a foot hold.

I would mine in Penn. system. Sell it. Work that plan for a couple of hours, and with that continue to grow a mining character. By 4 hours in, I would be pretty good, with a million, maybe 2, and a ship that could sport level 4 or 5 guns, carry 300 cargo maybe.

But something has changed. Mining is useless.
Trying various trade routes, I'm getting no where.
Nearly 4 hours in, I have a crappy 25,000.
Still stuck in the Star Flier I started with.
I've been attacked and blown up once by another player, completely contrary to the rules.
I can't hope to beat ANY npc in this crappy Star Flier.

So what's the game now? How are new characters making money? I'm not asking for a step by step or the easy the easy answer - but point me in the right direction here. Where is the money to be made in this game anymore?
