So, Flak turrets, instead of just complaining about how lame the stats were, I decided to trial them on my battleship. preliminary tests looked promising, however they have a massive drawback that does not affect any other gun nearly as severely.

If you try and fire a Flak turret inside an asteroid field the projectile will explode the instant you fire it, every time.

this is realllly anoying and makes battleships that use this weapon for their anti fighter weapon of choice helpless.

perhaps not, however since they are everywhere, at some point, you really are going to have to go into a field, they are everywhere inside and outside house space. and its a little silly that this is the only weapon affected by fields so badly, Missiles misfire sometimes in asteroid fields, but never repeatedly every time without fail.

I checked my ping at the time too and I had 69/0/0/0

I understand the problem might be related to the size of the warheads detonation radius, but, exploding -every- time is a little silly, maybe more of the time but not all the time.

How can this (if at all) be fixed?

I remember my first 3d-spacegame "flak" encounter in X3 very well.

It was an Pirate Galleon, a huge Pirate Carrier vessel (see pic below), that had an exessive loadout of socalled "cluster flak array"-Guns as standard.

Later i managed to capture one with my capture frigate and some support capitals on auto.

Then i found they didnt have to be fired, they just had to be set active and then fired like auto. As soon as some smaler vessel came in range it came under Flak-fire, like an area effect. There where no shots that exploded after like 500m but just explosions around the smaler vessels that where inside an imaginary bubble around the ship.

Now this is highly realistic because in real flak you also dont see the shots but only the explosions and such an Area effect is also used in FL already, when you come near a sun or mines or an explosive gaspocket.

Some suns in FL you can get almost into..only slowly loosing shield and hull, some are instadeadly. So this can be tweacked in dimensions..maybe also selective on hostile targets.

Should be something for DEV-Team to try out if its wanted. It would shure stop all the exploiting overpowered Bombers that just win already because the FL Battleship Armchairadmiral up till now can only take care of one target, nomatter a Battleship should have some runnery crews meaybe one for every Hardpoint even.
