So yeah, I'm using GIMP 2, I'm trying to get rid of the horrible white background. My last 'work' is the image in my signature.

So I'm applying the same technique where I fill the white background with bright green and tell the layer to use that green to go into Alpha.

But it washes out the colours, causing it to go certain few colours. I tried with several colours and the same things happened.

Is there a better way than Colour to Alpha?

Hm, I don't know GIMP2, but it sounds like you should change some settings ... perhaps the program assumes that you want to save the file in 256 colors only (or the file type can only support this much colors) and changes the color palette!

But again, I have no knowledge of this program:D

hmm, usualy when I want to get rid of something I just use "magic wand" with an fuzzy indication (I don't know how it's named in english vesion)
and simply cut and erase the selected area.
