Another neat feature for this kind of thing might be a green message like the "BLANK is trying to engage Cloaking Device" in 10k of the person /renameme-ing which says something like "BLANK has reconfigured his IFF to BLANK" or something like that.
Never really saw that kind of thing, though. Kinda weird.

The time limit is not 7 days, it is 24 hours now. Has been for awhile now. While I feel renaming your ship to throw the law off is a valid tactic, doing it while in space so that your ship disappears is an exploit. Making it so you can only do it on a base prevents this exploit from being abused.
If the person was just trying to circumvent the time limit on a rename I'd say it was a gray loop hole, but that isn't the case in what Anne is pointing out. They are using it to F1 without a F1 message appearing and thus avoiding punishment for F1'n out of an interaction; ala an exploit.
So smugglers can pull a dirty trick once a week.
