No ! Why ? Challenge and ( don't kill me for this pl0x ) realism. Real battleships are being sunk by Fighter-Bombers and Bombers.
No, I want to keep the cap challenge.
Real battleships can afford escorts and such. I dont like the need to gather 15 buddies just so I can take off and travel three lanes someplace without risking 50m death penalty at hands of 200k death penalty snubs. Plus, in RL comparison, three bombers or even two against a battleship? Got that many bombs, no. Snac is forever. Rockets can be shot by point blank cannons and whatno...invalid point dood.
Not this battleships vs bombers again please the topic is different, battleships and cruisers will suck till they are public- that is the idea behind them and nothing can change it. I proposed on several occasions more buffed caps in form of flagships for the official factions nobody even replied to that so ye. The topic is about dead penalty on all ships , in general I am for it but it should be hard to balance/remove the abuse/skill/numbers difference into it, because I dont see fair if one who is good in PvP kill 5-6 new players alone and they need to pay that, currently ship balance is very skill based and with such dead penalty will be bad thing. It is indeed not normal cap ship to loose to 2 or 3 small ships even with escorts, it is indeed not normal codes to be better then 90% of the faction guns and more energy efficient or 3-4 fighters to kill capital ship but it is fact because you cannot balance it otherwise without killing someone's fun, capital ships are hard to learn, but it you learn how to fly them they can be very effective.

That's not the point. Until the differences across all classes are properly balanced so that numerical advantage is required as the classes go up (by giving larger ships effective weapons against smaller ones for a start), any penalty to capital ships would be too harsh. But that kind of balance won't happen as long as most of the community is biased towards fighters and bombers.

Did I mention number anywhere ? *looks around*
I know one two or three real fighter-bombers can't sink a real battleship.
But let's look back in history - 2 W.W. , guess how the Battleship Yamato was sunk. And don't forget, that without the help of a few Swordfish torp. Bombers, the Bismarck wouldn't have been sunk, or at least with more losses on english side.
And if I go mega-realism, like you did: There won't be any or at least very small number of BSses, Carriers wouldn't have so much weapon slots bla bla bla.
I like the idea of a penalty but the cash system is probably not the best idea. It is supposed to be fun. Not real.
I do like the idea of a time out however that someone mentioned earlier. Start off at 4 hours and move up frankly. Whats more, I'd include traders in that now. Miners have to, why not traders?
Why?
Traders might re-consider their options when faced with an overpowering threat so no more Mr 'Kill me now'.
Just hardwire it in to the system so everyone has to lump it and no sneaking on.
The real issue here for me is with the novices and pilots who simply can't PvP.
I can't hit squat but I enjoy it!
I regularly fill out the ranks of the 'cannon fodder wing' and give you hot shots something to fire at. I won't if it starts costing me big money (I mainly pilot snubs but do have a battleship).
New Disco players will get disheartened everytime they die because of the amount of time they need to recover their loses in their Gull transport.
Theres the issue of abuse involved as well. Some poor schmo who upsets the local pirate group in his 'police cruiser' is going to get one hell of a repair bill over the next few weeks and yet, it's that very person that often gives purpose to that pirate group.
I like the idea of a penalty but not cash. However time is a yes from me.
