P.S 50% chance that you'll only make it worse. Get it to the service
Don't EVER do this. You're liable to start a fire or further damage your console. If you have need to overheat the console, you should open it up (there are plenty of tutorials on this), remove the CD drive (make sure to remove any CDs first) from the box, then unplug the fans. Then put it back together (at least partways, so it's an enclosed space and the interior isn't open to the air). Leave the CD drive out. Now let it run, should take about 15 minutes to overheat. It'll give you a new light signal (I think all 4 lights solid, not blinking iirc) when it has overheated. Then you turn it off, let it cool, reopen, reattach the fans and drive, and start it back up. But you never ever use towels. This might solve the problem.
I couldn't do this on my last Xbox as I didn't have the tools for it, and the bolts were stripped even if I did; But the way to fix this permanently is to remove all interior components, including the heatsinks. Then remove the 2 X-shaped clamps at the bottom of your case. You basically need to get the electrical flow going again. You take some washers and attach them using whatever that type of adhesive is called, you'll have to look up what the name is. Then re-attach the components to the X-clamp. Keep the fans unplugged and the CD case out (just a precaution to avoid damage). Now put the case back together and make it overheat. Once it has done so, reattach the CD and fans and you should be good to go. You may need to overheat two or three times. This should fix your problem permanently. The temporary fix of just overheating doesn't always fix it, and when it does, it can last from several months to several days. So the 2nd solution is definitely adviseable. Please consult a tutorial on how to do this step-by-step.
Then pick up some generic arctic silver and some 10mm bolts, nylon washers, and regular washers. Also get some Goo-Gone to help clean the old heat sinks off, and some alcohol to clean stuff completely before you put the new compound back on.
Takes about 2 hours (or less) from start to finish.
My 360 - which was a pre-production model, and due to various things spent a year and a half in a Wal-Mart before I got it - RROD'd at age 2 1/2. I fixed it using the fix as described on the website above. That was five YEARS ago. It works perfectly fine, and has done so ever since I fixed it.
Since then, I personally have fixed 4 360's this way, and I sell someone these parts about every other week. It's a good and solid fix IF YOU DO IT RIGHT.

Also, if you go for a new X360, the cooling system is much more better. Whoever designed the first box should be bashed with a big stick and taught about airflow.
no, i've tried to fix 2 of my own with artic, headgun trick, swapping bolts, wrapping a towel, none of them helped.
but maybe it didn't worked cause it was one of the first xbox
and don't say i did it wrong, i didn't
just sayin ive had to do the towl trick like 4 times (it's worked temporarily every time).
also eventually your going to have the problem of your xbox not wanting to read CD's. this happend to my xbox and ive disasebled the whole thing CD drive and all cleaned it all out lubricated the whole thing but all to no avail. the fix is simple....bash it on the top right above the CD drive a few times then listen you can tell if its gonna work cuz it will sound smoother and will obviously give you the open you 'play game'.
so ya more then likley you will soon have this problem.

I found a simpler fix for when it doesn't read a disc, i just open the disc tray take out the cd and repeatedly open and close the drive for about 2 minutes and it works after that. but my xbox has had every error in the book and has red ringed 7 times and every time i just unplug it for a day and plug it back in and it works fine.
