Arizona is an open carry state, and if you want to carry it - feel free to do so. We can openly carry pistols here in Indiana.
In any event, regarding the specific topic - if you're going to attack transports, then get the right equipment. If that means you can't use a light fighter, then sorry, too bad, you can't mount mortars on that light fighter, so deal with what you CAN use.
where do you live again? been lookin for a gun and massachuseets is erm... problematic in terms of weapons i will prolly move to arizonia though
the ak 47 is a simpleton's gun. it can be operated by a 6yearold child, and requires next to no cleaning, but it is really inaccurate at ranges of over 300 yards. in fact, if you hit anything at that range, its prolly cos you were aiming at something else.
Heckler and Koch guns require serious cleaning every 15 rounds or so, but are incredibly accurate. as opposed to the ak's 'or the M16's spray and pray' approach, these weapons create wounds, not casualties. in a battlefield, a casualty requires four men to lift him back to safety; the heroes of hollywood are a fiction.
by having a wound, it means that for one round, you have removed five people from the firefight. economically, logistically, this gives an overwhelming advantage.
civilan weapons (target shooting, grouse, clay pigeon, hunting weapons) are far more powerful than military ones in real life, so using these examples to back up an argument in a dicussion about a space boat game is erroneous.
the real question here is:
'can i have military power guns on my civvy ship?'
answer:
'no. join the military'.
why? because if everyone flew the same ship, and had the same guns, then there would be no variation, no growth, no new encounters... and the discovery mod would go the way of every other mod out there. 10-15 players, locked in pvp spawn-wars. do not want, sorry.

Indiana...
Yeah, the Peoples Democratic Republic of Massachusetts is something else. Hey, look at it this way: Chicago, Illinois, has some of the toughest anti-gun laws in the country. That's why last weekend they only had 8 people killed and 47 others wounded by gunfire.
In game, I'm probably considered a bit of a freak. On my civie ships, I use ... civie guns. I actually try to role-play each character like they are - not make them the super-uber combat clone of everyone else. (Yeah, I can hear the comments now - not just in game, freak... :) )

Only thing I can really complain about is that all civilian hullbusters have a high refire rate, no 2.00 or 4.00. As for strength, I think they're pretty well balanced.
