Ladies and Gents ... it doesn't matter anymore. This discussion has not clarified anything. If anything ... this topic is even more vague and confusing than it was before it was posted.
One rule I'd like to see is that if a character's ship is destroyed ... the character must swap characters or log off for 4 hours. Its the only TRUE role play thing to do. A real Trader would have to wait for the insurance company to buy a new transport or freighter. A Pirate would need to procure a new ship ... as would anyone else. So why don't we just put this thing to rest. If you die in combat (Trader, Pirate, whatever) ... just swap to another character or log off for 4 hours. This would avoid all this BS that we're doing here.

Characters who are killed should be rest back to their home planet / base for a period of 4 hours. Deciding this would be easy for system owning factions, for other player factions from a pre-greed location, and the other mere mortals their location could be based on where they purchased their ID.
