This is really annoying me now.

My HDD has now twice unpartitioned itself. This is a real pain, as it means that my beautiful computer is out of action at the moment.

What could cause it to do this twice? I mean I have (after the first one) re-created the two partitions I have on the drive, formatted both of them to NTFS and installed XP. I was running XP just long enough for me to instal my drivers and now it has unpartitioned it again and I'm left with a raw, un-formatted, un-partitioned drive.

WHY????!?!?!?!!!?!?!?!

:angry2::shok::angry:

EDIT. fter the first time it did this I did manage to do a bit of data recovery and get back some really inportant photo's from it, so now I can do whatever I want to the drive and not care that much. I am expecting to have to just go out and buy a new one, but I'd rather try everything I can before I do that 'cos I am rather broke at the moment.

EDIT 2. It is a maxtor 160 gig SATA drive.

1st: How long have you had it? Maxtor is VERY good with their RMA policy.
2nd: You have a backup of your FAM accounts, right?

Okay, since you've not had it long, just call Maxtor and tell them about your problem, and they should be open to the idea of replacing it. (might require some postage money though)

All that said. I might just upgrade a litte. and buy a 25ogig sata, and an 80gig sata for my windows installation.

should cost me about ?50 to do, which is only a little bit more than I payed in the first place. Who knows.

Definitely sounds like a dodgy drive (guess you worked that out by now). Just take it back.

Dude don't buy an 80 G... you don't know how long its been sitting on the shelf. Besides it has the worst cents/gig. Rather than 250+80 you should be able to get one 500 for the same price.

Dodgy drive. It is a bookend.

Replace it. And not with a Maxtor.

And please tell me [M]'s Movie is safe...

Deffinatly a HD hardware issue. We have more issues with maxtors at our shop then any other brand (well minus IBM Deskstars). Return it for a Western Digital, they have a pretty good rep and we haven't had to change many.

On a good note, we have a box full of broken Maxtor drives so we always have plenty of fun targets for the range.:yahoo:

Yes.. [M]'s movie is on my awesome external. No worries there, perfectly safe.

I have just about got the drive working, and I'm using it right now. I just had to create a tiny little 1 gig partitiion at the start of it and its running ok... Only a temporary fix until I can be bothered to get a new drive, but it works for now. I won't keep anything important on it and I don't really care if it destroys itself.

As soon as it does I'm gunna take it apart and get the ridicuclously shiny disc and use it as a frisby... maybe even put it in my microwave...

I will probably buy a western digital drive, as they made my external and it rules... doesn't even get remotely warm after a week of being on constantly.

I might even set up a raid array or something like that if I get the cash.
