So ya know, I find a thread this morning discussion someone asking about changing the music in Freelancer, right? But then a thought came to mind, would this be classed as modding? Thought I'd take a look at the rules just in case and find this.

Discovery Server Rules Wrote:2.1 Following actions are considered cheating on server:

- Using non-Discovery mods, speed-related and loot-related mods especially, as well as using modifications that improve stats of items and ships;

Changing the speeds? Nope.
Changing the drops of anything? Nope.
Modifying stats, items, or ships? Nope.

What would I be doing? Simply just replacing the WAV files within the FL Music folders. Which of course doesn't effect anything in the game itself other then what you listen to. Wouldn't be giving the Tizona's texture, wouldn't be making different guns sound like others, wouldn't have a sound bite saying "You suck at flying!" every time you run in to something, instead just simply replacing the music for the game itself.

Just wondering if this would be considered legal or not, could always be fun messing around with the music a bit. ^_^

Seems fine to me, unless the anti-cheat can hear things or knows the exact size of all the .wav files (and cares) it shouldn't cause problems either. Still, if majkp or Igiss could clarify, that would be nice...

It's all client side and doesn't affect anybody else so don't see why not.
Same goes for ship skins. Since you are the only one who can see them or hear the music, doesn't affect the gameplay in any way.
Though you might get a slight PvP advantage by some stirring music:P

If for whatever reason this isn't allowed, you could always get close-ish by turning the music off and running another sound program in the background. Personally I wouldn't bother unless I'm trading, since the Freelancer music is pretty good and already comes nicely cropped to loop.

Gives me an Idea I wonder if I could replace the wav files with blank ones to stop the music cutting in now and again. It has a habit of doing that on me even though I've turned it off.

Not gonna attempt it though till I know the situation regarding it I don't want to break any rules.

One thing, remember to keep the names exactly the same. Since they are referenced in the files to those names the game wouldn't be able to find the music when it went looking for it. Or change the references in the file.

Out of curiousity, what sort of music are you putting in? I have FL music turned off and use iTunes in the background simply because I can't find any fitting music to replace Freelancers. Having Coldplays Viva La Vida playing in Freelancer might be odd:P
Only thing I came close to with were the gladiator soundtrack etc. Less voices, more stirring music.

Should be no problem imho. I like the idea of having a wav of my girlfriend saying things like "pvp whore detected" when a red shows up on scanner. Or "thank god you're nearly dead, can we go to the cinema now?" instead of "hull breach imminent".

The music you play might drastically alter your RP quality. Never attempt to pirate while listening to Godflesh or Ministry.

I just renamed my "Music" folder to "Music1" and created an empty "Music" folder. Works perfectly.
