Man if you mean Firefly, it was first, Serenity is something like all never aired and scratched seasons in one movie.

Firefly is miracle
Serenity is epic

There's a fan reference in BSG. Or was it Caprica? In any case, the Firefly is in the background, flying past in the one of the cityscapes.

Is the tv series worth a look at?

The series is definitely worth it. I heard that when the film came out, many people hadn't seen the series and watched it after. The series really helps explain a lot of what happened in the film.
