Recently, I learned that the majority of Disco Hit-boxes are not actually shaped like the ships....my reaction was: What?!?! why?
I mean, anyone who fought a marauder before the most recent update knows how infuriating it is to hit something, and do no damage, especially if you are flying something without that benefit.
Now, it really bothers me when I am fighting ships, and don't know what hits land, and what hits slide through the model (which is what I aim for, not being able to see the hitbox) and cause no damage, especially since I am flying almost entirely vanilla ships....
Does it bother anyone that the fresh, beautiful ships we have recently implemented are represented to the game engine as some sort of rectangle stuck in the center? It makes me wonder, how often I have died, not because my aim was off, but because the ships are broken.
Well some ships do have slight problems about that. And some of them are slightly harder to hit than the others. I am not sure if this could be remedied though, could take some extra time for the designers maybe. Yet, the wireframe on the vanilla ships is a bigger concern for me most of all.

Honeslty, if they made a ship, shouldn't they make a matching hitbox? We have tonnes of ships, and they are getting spammed into places where they don't make sense, and they are all low quality?
The wireframe is another issue. So far as I know, no one tries to make wireframes for their ships. So, I fly mostly vanilla ships, because they have distributed damage, and now, apparently, the only hitboxes that aren't screwed.
Creating custom SURs of Vanilla quality is impossible. We have to use resized SUR files of Vanilla models, and there's no way to improve the situation. Creating custom SURs is a complex process, and success is never guaranteed. A custom SUR that works fine on one PC might cause instant dock crash on another, like we already learned.
And the ships are not "broken". Me, and ship modellers, do everything we can to find the SURs that match as close as possible. But perfect match cannot be achieved. And, Unselie, I know that it might be fun to criticise everything here, including admins and the mod itself, like you are doing lately on a regular basis, but maybe it's time to stop? If you really think everything is wrong, propose how to make it better, or just leave it alone.
Developers apparently had a tool that allowed to create them. But modders cannot. It was discussed on TLR forums for years, but no one has offered a reliable and easy-to-use solution for this problem. So, most of our new ships will stay with their current hitboxes.
I know that certain modellers have plans to create custom SURs for their new ships, but that's for the future.
Same about wireframes: it is possible to create them somehow, but it's also not an easy task and cannot be automated. Again, there are plans to create them in future, and if they'll come to life, we'll have wireframes for certain new ships.
That happens when you dont understand how much work is too make new ship, base, system etc.. try making one fully textured model from scratch and then tell modders that they dont try hard.
I think maybe those SUR files was some kind of hardoce since develo?pers did not wanted to mod freeelancer to its limits......
@ Unselie and blunt: Get Antons model tool and open a SUR file. Then you can change the values to create a custom hitbox and i will bite you if they are bugged.
Some mathematic experts of modelers i think were able to create a hitbox by themself.
I'm not that expert and i wont be just because of you.
I always try to get the most fitting hitbox for my models and resize them accordingly to the model size.
Hey now, I just asked if it were possible, assuming that it could be... I didn't say I had the skills of folk like yourselves, nor was any insult intended.
So... it is possible for mathematics experts?
Could we ask these people if they'd like to help out?
Igiss, I honestly believe that it's not Unselie's intention just to criticize; she really wants to help improve the mod in whatever way she can, just like many of the rest of us. We just aren't all sure of how. She found out about a problem, and brought it to public attention to see if there was anything that could be done about it. The last thing I think she would want is for people to take offense, even though it might've come out that way.
