From what I've seen Smithing is for more of the Heavy Armor, swords, maces, greatswords, type of thing. I don't use that.

The left side of smithing is for light armor. The right side is for heavy armor.

Every type of material you can work with (except the dragon stuff) allows you to make any weapon, including bows.

More importantly, any type of material you have the perk for can be upgraded quite a bit, depending on your smithing skill.

Unfortunately, daedric stuff is the strongest weapons you can get, so if you take the light armor side of the tree you'll be kind of behind where you could be, but the ability to upgrade things is invaluable. It's also unfortunate that when you think about it, there's almost no reason to use light armor at all, given how much better heavy armor is, and there's no disadvantage to it (other than the weight to carry it until you get the perk to lighten it).

The way smithing is currently, it's pretty strong for any character that uses armor or weapons--which is pretty much any character, because there's no disadvantage to spellcasting for using armor.

Ah. Ok. I see what you mean. But.. I'm too far in to start Smithing. And besides, my Dark Brotherhood clothes > Basic heavy armor.

I don't see any armour pieces that, even when enchanted manually, give the silly high magicka bonuses that some robes do.

But to claim to have seen everything in this game would be quite silly.

I'd bet you could improve those with smithing, too :P I haven't found the Dark Brotherhood yet, but I'll let you know...

The power of enchanting goes up quite a bit with skill level and perks, so I wouldn't be surprised if you could get close eventually, but certainly not at the lower levels that some of those robes become available.

The Archmage's Robes are indeed really ridiculous.

This thread is a good example of a game developer's struggle: how to keep the gamers from ruining their own experience by analyzing everything?

How to have fun in Skyrim: take your time, look around, don't think about what would be the best or not the best later, just play now. Walk around. Kill a Dragon here or there. Don't expect anything later. Just enjoy now. That's what's important.

Have anyone seen the new Dark Brotherhood robes? It's awful. The graphics are good but some models (clothes, weapons) are ridiculous.

Anyway, I have an imperial male, mostly a warrior with two handed weapon, but also good at one handed and destruction(magic).
Favorite clothe is the Thalmor set.
