Generally your group will get a lot more attention with the premise of easy money. Try getting 35 people with an indie pirate group.

Every official faction starts out as an unofficial faction ya know. And sure 35 is a lot, but more than 10 is easy, heck the VWA|, unofficial bundschuh faction, has 15 members atm and the bundschuh are not exactly the most popular npc faction. Quite the contrary in fact.

Wait. So indie group is still indies? I don't get it. I thought indie refers to person who chose to play without affiliating oneself to any particular player group, be it official or not.

Yeah, all the official factions start out small, but many also started with a far smaller SERVER population. Yeah, the Bundschuh aren't popular, no surprise there, but with the current player distribution it's far easier to just join an Official faction if you want to make friends than it is to mosey on over to the newest unofficial that'll last a month and disappear.

Your post makes no sense. Are you trying to say I support official factions or something? I'm only in one, and the rest of my characters are indie.

Or is it because I said group? Want me to say faction instead? It hardly matters what term I use to describe it. Basically, articulate your post better and tell me what the hell it means.

My recollection of starting out on the server (October of last year) is that it was:

- difficult to get started. I knew vanilla pretty well but it was still radically different here, with different systems, mining areas, trade routes, etc. I couldn't find people willing to explain things either, and I didnt meet my first Angel until my 3rd or 4th ship at which point I no longer needed their help. What's interesting now is that it is very easy to get started if you know what to do, but at the time I was helpless and lost. I had to rely on Internet searches for everything and it was all outdated stuff. Wiki is contradictory on a lot of stuff, like RP fiction in the infocards that does not correlate to gameplay at all (can I really fly this ship into the atmosphere?? kee-rash)

- confusing rules and RP layering into each other in complicated ways. The server rules need to be simplified, or need to be explained better (the console spam for the 4-hour rule is very poorly worded, and a lot of novices don't understand what it means).

- twit PVP. I was killed all the freakin time, not just by pirates but by people who did it just because they could. I got killed by people on the badlands tradelane all the time, for no apparent reason. The first time I ventured out of house space I was killed by a Tridente in Cortez with a double-missile strike before I could ask what was going on. I almost raeged over that a couple of times in my early days. At the very least, Pennsylvania needs to be made a safe zone with no non-consual PVP, and exempted from some of the penalty rules, so that there is a place to figure out the game mechanics without being forced into 4-hour dirtnaps.

I've been thinking about a noob guide for a while, and will try putting one together

Does indie group exists?

I thought I was very clear on my post, when I explained that I understood term "indie" as a character not affiliated to any official on unofficial player faction/group.

I had rather say it was just for money they joined JZ.

Indie groups? In my mind 'indie' and 'unofficial' are interchangeable, especially if said 'unofficial' faction has no intention of becoming official. It's just a group of indie players who band together under one flag and faction, prescribing to a certain way of roleplaying their characters as said faction.

I can say that people join groups for certain purpose. Does it matter which one?

Some groups are into money making via mining, other groups via trading. Other groups are PvP oriented. There are pirate groups as well.

A player is driven by purpose to join the faction. If it were purposeless act, then what is the point of joining faction if you expect nothing and want nothing?

Because my original point was about making friends and meeting new people, not making money. If the only reason people are joining JZ (and thus becoming an oddity among unofficial factions in regards to numbers) is because they want money, then you can hardly use them in your argument against my original point.

But if they join a group, do they still retain their independence?

Are Jumping Zoner members using their characters still indies?
How are they different from official faction members of OSI, who jump-trades as well?

Both sides chose to affiliate themselves to certain group and adhere to their regulations. JZ- has regulation that tagged Whales are not to be used for regular trading. OSI might have regulation while using their tag.
