Not that simple--I hardly used healing at all early on, so it's not just "if you don't heal you'll have a hard time." That said, that can certainly help for some issues.
I just hit level 42 - still on my first (rebooted) go through. I have not completed the main quest - or for that matter, any of the actual full, major sidequests. I'm closest with the Thieves Guild, as I just got the Skeleton Key - which I think I'm going to keep for a while. Nocturnal doesn't really need that key for a while, right? :)
You want something fun to do when you enchant, especially if you play a thief and/or assassin? Make sure that once you've got your Sneak up to level 50, you take the Assassin's Blade skill. Then enchant your dagger so that it will do soul trap. Carry lots of Black Soul Gems - or even better, get The Black Star (Azura's Star, but with the Nelecar bonus). Sneak up behind bandits, cut their throats with the 15x damage bonus, trap their souls, and have lots of enchanting available.

Fun fact: Daggers don't benefit from +one-handed enchants, so with a fully enchanted suit you're actually better off with the 6x/12x sneak damage from swords, axes, or maces than with the 15x/30x from daggers...
So, I finished the main quest yesterday with a lvl 40 character. I'm mildly impressed, the last hour is really epic, but overall, I preferred Oblivion's main quest. I find it to have a better feeling to it (that doesn't mean Skyrim's main quest is crappy; as I said, it has its pure epic moments).
I also finished the Imperial Legion quest line. It felt more like a continuation of mini-missions than really a quest, but I guess that's what military campaigns are. It also offers a lot of combat with allies and enemies, that's always nice. And it's a great plus to get to choose sides in the war.
The Companions quest line was entertaining, similar to Oblivion's Warriors Guild in terms of pew pew (or slash slash) opportunities.
Haven't tried to join any other guild with this character, as he's more a of a straightforward warrior and I prefer to join the Thieves or Mages Guild with actual thieves and mages characters.

Good to know, but I trust this will be fixed in a patch, like the bugged elemental resistances.
As usual, I keep going back to a High Elf Mage.:DI love magic too much to really enjoy the other play-styles. I've done Thief and Assassin, but it's playing a Mage that I have the most fun doing.:)
