I've been debating this for some time, so I'm wondering how many in the community would be willing to help out on this.

The provider is APlus.net and i've had some decent service from them in the past. They are by far, the only ones that will allow us to run Freelancer on a Windows server they have. 1000 GB for bandwith per month, 160GB Hard Drive Space (Plenty for you to play with Igiss!) as well as hardware that beats what I have here.

It's $99 a month... And I was doing some figuring.. if we had at least 10 people (Including me) sending a paypal account $10 a month.. we'd more than break the limit. So how about it people?

It'd get MUCH better service than what we have available right now.. and it'd be up more often than mine (minus any downtime needed to install updates, etc).

Questions, comments, even flame welcome. Please post and vote.

Im a bit ambivalent about this one

On one hand, I wouldnt mind paying to support Discovery. On the other hand, I refuse to pay for something that I can have for free. I guess it boils down to the question: Is Discovery interesting enough for me to pay for it?. And in my case the answer is: Most defiantly not!.

Its not that I wont pay for something in fact, I pay to be a member of WarSeer. Its a simple cost-benefit analysis. What do I get for my money? And in Discoverys case, Im simply not getting near enough to pay for it. I visit WarSeer several times a day and have some great discussions with other users there. On average, I log onto Discovery once a week or thereabout (depending on how busy I am).

Does this mean that I would never pay to use Discovery? No. The addition of the new systems goes a long way to making me feel that Im getting something valuable here. Keep up the good work, and I might be convinced to pay a bit to support the server.

But 10$ a month? Never! 1 or 2 $ a month and we might talk about it

Sorry, but no I wouldn't pay anything to support this.

I will not pay anything that so much as resembles a monthly payment, that's also why I don't play many MMORPGs. Of course, if it's important like the rent, phone, insurance etc I'd pay. But this isn't.
Heh, I wouldn't even pay for my internet connection if it wasn't for the fact that it was a part of the rent...

Basically, transferring money to PayPal from here will cost me about 20-25% commission, and minimum transfer sum will be about $50. So I won't be able to donate small sums anyway.

I don't mind donating if those $50 would be enough for 3-4 months. Cannot afford more.

I would be willing to help you pay for it, however the problem I face is that I'm alot younger than most of the people here at discovery, in fact I'm only 14, and being 14 in england means 0 income.

Whatever money I do get is always instantly dissolved into a number of things, the main one being Tae Kwon Do classes, the cheapest thing I can get without having my parents drive for an hour is ?27 a month, I have to pay ?10 towards it. So as you can see, money doesn't go very far for me.

When I'm eventually a well paid rich person, I'll come and give you some money for being a dude though :D .

Wolf, A diificult one... That sort of outlay a month takes to me to the realms of Eve..
Which is what most of my contemporaries are playing, which I don't have the time
or inclination to do at the moment. The joy of Freelancer is its availability to all, at
no cost, with a community still dedicated to improving a great game.
Also asking around I find that most people who play the Discovery mod think that this
server is one of the most reliable and stable around.
A friend of mine has a huge server sitting in his office at home at the moment, pretty
much unused, so if it's a case of you not having the time to run yours I'll ask him about
whats involved setting it up to run Freelancer, and whether its feasable time and trouble
wise. Thats all a bit beyond my capabilities
Sorry getting carried away there. So basically no I don't want to pay for it, but I'll
check alternatives so we don't loose this free server

I voted maybe. Although I like Discovery mod, I'm reluctant to pay at the moment. I'd pay if there were more players and different server rules.

Role-played characters:
daedalus - Liberty Navy
bandersnatch - Ruthless criminal possessed by a (huge) alien
Shredder - Small-time Kusari pirate, looking to join the Blood Dragons

"Bounty Hunters. We don't need that scum." - Admiral Piett

You might get people to pay for it, if you could provide something unique for them.
As it is right now, there really isn't anything that people can't get anywhere else for free. Simply because you can get the mod from lancersreactor. So there's really no need for them to pay.

If you said that for example people could change their names for free, or people would start out with more cash, or whatever, then people might be more interested.

I'm a strapped-for-cash teenager like Lancer and others so i can't vote for getting the paid-for server. Anyway Freelancer should be free, it's in the name!

I'm sorry. That was a very bad joke/pun. I'll go bang my head off of the wall.
