I would be willing to help fund Discovery, but not $10 a month. I would be willing to make small payments here and there.

Okay... Some of you made the statement "Why pay when we can get it free, as in freelancer".

Do you HONESTLY think that Discovery 24/7 Official Server is "free" in that sense? Then you're kidding yourself. It's hosted on my company's BUSINESS INternet line, which costs me upwards $200 a month. The bandwith restrictions apply to it. I cannot write the bandwith off to "business expeditures" cause they're not business related. Not even remotely there.

So.. if you think i'm hosting it free... Wrong. I'm still paying for it. It just happens to be my business server and I'm offering it free-of-charge, but it still costs money.

The Donations would *NEVER* be mandatory. It's fairly obvious I wouldn't be able to rely on any donations to help defray the cost.

Let me list the Pros and Cons so you all understand.

WebKnight Web Designs Business Line:

Pro:
100% Free to the members
Reliable, direct-access to the server.

Cons:
Not cost-effective to WKWeb Designs
Not entirely 24/7 as the server also powers the business
Low-end hardware. Not the best available.

APlus.net
Pros:
Guaranteed 99.99999999% uptime
Better hardware
Better support
Better bandwith (1000GB/Month anyone?)

Cons:
$99 a month deal

See what I'm getting at everyone? The only real difference between the two is I can't afford both BY MYSELF.

I don't need *EVERYONE* to donate. but trying to argue that the server is free as is, and no one's paying for it really is bullsh*t. Igiss hosted it, and he paid for it still (bandwith).

If you guys want me to continue to host it.. Fine. I'd *REALLY* like to move it off my network to a dedicated server since it 1) frees up a lot of my administrative duties 2) provides much better service and support than I ever could and 3) is more likely to go down due to a router problem than me having to reset my network.

But.. Please.. drop the "it's free" crap. It's insulting to me. There's no such thing.

Wolfpack, what I meant by getting for free is that I can go play FreeLancer on other servers than this. I am fully aware that it cost money to have a server running

Wolfpack: True enough, to you the Discovery 24/7 Official Server isn't free. But to basically everyone else it is free. They can just log on and play, without paying a thing. So for the normal user, this game and this mod is free.
Basically you're trying to get money from people, for something that people can get for free, just by playing on another server.
Except perhaps the beta version.

I'm not trying to insult you or anything, I'm just stating the obvious.

Lol, Wolf, when most people say donations, what they mean, is compulsory payment. But if it was a donation thing, I would donate anything I could scrape together, its just, I wouldn't be able to give you a constant flow of donations, it would have to be $20 once in a while...

Wolfpack, you said that:

Wolfpack98,Mar 18 2006, 08:55 AM Wrote:It's $99 a month... And I was doing some figuring.. if we had at least 10 people (Including me) sending a paypal account $10 a month.. we'd more than break the limit. So how about it people?

This sound very much like a requirement, or fee, if you ask me.

Look, you cant sign up for a server costing $99 pr. month without requiring a monthly fee from the players, can you? How would you handle it, for example, if one month no players donated to the server? Would you pay for it yourself? If you would, then I applaud your dedication to the server, but in the long run its infeasible to do it that way. How long would you be willing to pay for the server out of your own pocket? What if no players donated for several months in a row?
If we use a server like that, then we need to be absolutely sure that we can pay for it. And the only way to do that is with a monthly fee.

The only way to do it with donations would be to donate for a server that we own ourselves. But even then theres the problem of paying for the bandwidth

I'm sorry Wolfpack, i honestly didn't know u had to pay for the Discovery server and stuff. Couldn't u just have a PC running FLServer 24/7? I dont know too much about servers so if people could tell me why this is a bad idea i'd appreciate it.
