$99 a month!? I may be a n00b when it comes to hosting servers, but that seems a little expensive. In the long run, wouldn't it be cheeper to pay for your own dedicated server instead of asking for someone to host it for you? (I know you can buy a server, i've seen 'em!) I'd be willing to front a few bucks (20, 30, possibly 50 or more if I can get help from some of my friends and family) so you can get a brand new server of your own. Then you put Linux or Windows, or whatever on it, and run the dedicated server thingy and Tah Dah! Discovery Server!

Kane, payment is mainly for bandwith and fast & reliable connection that's difficult to achieve away from good datacenter. Let alone home. Hardware is important, but that's not the main issue - flserver was never adopted for server usage, it might as well run at any hi-end gaming PC with powerful processor and enough memory. Connection is the key. And support too.

My personal thoughts on this all? I was hosting server for a while and didn't pay much for traffic - prices are different here for many things. As we've got salaries 5-10 times less than in US for same job positions, you might easily calculate that $10 for me is equal to about $50 for anyone from US or western Europe, and this may apply to many other players around here, maybe to a least extent. I'd be willing to help because that's my mod, but I doubt that relying on donations is a safe idea.

Even if we do find 10 people willing to pay, what if next month some of them will leave? be unable to pay? or just forget? This will cause constant search for donors around here, which might result in rather unhealthy atmosphere on server. That's the last thing I would want.

As fewer people play Freelancer now than it was 1-2 years ago, I don't expect a huge flow of newcomers in any perspective. So I'm sorry but if we won't find sources to pay for this server from inside our current community, members really willing and capable of donating without demanding in-game benefits for themselves - we haven't got any more places to search.

I hope this won't get too personal. Donation arguments are number one reason why communities like this die.

ONe more little statement that might shed some light.

$99 a month is "Expensive' for a game server? Try again, guys.

Gameserver hosting companies that host the major Unreal Tournament/Quake III Arena, Battlefield Vietnam servers (Even Battlefield 2 Ranked) charge upwards $250 a month for a 64 player slot. ON the low end.. 8 players... $78 a month.

Think about that, people. *RELIABLE and BEST* service does cost a certain ammount of money. At least I'm not suggesting I buy a fiber optic line (which would run in the Thousand dollar range) and host my own servers...

I think i would be safe in saying.

most people would love the idear of haveing a sever like that and most people would love playing on it trust me i would.

but like igiss said getting the money is the hard part.

thos who are willing to donate now might not be able to in 2 months time and then what?
the sever just dies coz we can find the money.

and as several people have said why would they pay when they can just switch to a different mod.

i would if i didnt have loans and detes ect but even then i couldent gaurenter it from month to month.

ok it is a wounderfull idear and i agree it is cheap (no argument there) but it isnt feesable in the long run i belive.

"As fewer people play Freelancer now than it was 1-2 years ago, I don't expect a huge flow of newcomers" igiss is right on this as well.

over time we are more likely to see our numbers drop then increase further makeing it harder to find the money.

Dont get me wrong wolf the idear is a good one just the actaul apliction of it and how it would play out is whats got me worried.

What the ..? Do you know how to use punctuation? Do you know how to spell English words? Well, did you ever see how MY NICK IS SPELLED AT LEAST??? I'm sorry but it really angers. - Igiss

a) Im 13 my mum controls how i spend so far
b) I done terible in the last term at school so my mum is still a bit angry
c) Im a total cheepskate and i dont have any money and if i hate any i put it in my bank account where no one else can get at it except me.
