Hello elgatodiablo,
I don't have a specific homework question, but more of a concern of how my mind works.

I'm a junior in high school, and in May I'm taking the SAT. And apparently, that test determines in what colleges you get into, and basically if you go at all. And that's my problem. I don't believe that some test should determine your future. Tests don't prove anything! When you get a job, you won't be taking a job to see how much you get paid, so this is all pointless. And I also hate the American educational system, and how it works. You take a test and that's it, nothing else, wow I have never hated one thing so much. Not only this, but I got that huge use-less SAT study guide, and on the first page it says that it's a non-profit organizaiton! I dropped the book and started laughing at that! Non profit?!?!?!?! Prep classes cost THOUSANDS of dollars, so now they want to act nice?!?!?!
Basically, with this being drilled into my mind, I really don't care about the SAT's. They don't prove anything, and it's a huge money scam. Not only this, but I'm leaving this damned country once I finish high school and going somewere were the educatiol system isn't so corrupt. Yes, corrupt, money hungry, and dirtily run by a bad government.
There, that's how I evaluated things I learned in school.

But my main problem is this: My dad says I have to study and all that crap a parent will tell their kids. However, my mind tells me, it doesn't prove anything, I'm better than this test, why should I even bother taking it? Now I know this'll kill me because it's happened before. For example, if I don't like a book we're reading in a class, then I won't read it. I like to make myself superior to the system.

But anyways, anyway you could help me understand, or atleast give me a good reason to even bother with this ridiculous test? My life's been... well... pretty crappy and depressing, so I don't have such a great will to care anymore, but any advice and help I could get would be very much appreciated.

and sorry for whatever cursing and insulting I did, I had to refrain from going over the top.
Thanks again.

Unfortunatly Swiss that is how the system works. It does not measure intelligence so much as a willingness to work hard.

And yes, the ACT and SAT are both by "non-profit" companies that make a large amount of profit. That is not the issue here.

The issue is whether you will work hard to get the score (and grades) you need. The American system of education does not teach knowledge, it teaches people how to learn, and more importantly, how to work hard. Because without hard work people do not succeed in the "real world." (As if school is somehow less real)

Yep, you live in a country with an educational system you don't like... I'm afraid you'll have to suck it up and count yourself lucky that you have the good fortune to be from a country with schools at all.

No, no no no no. It teaches you to close your mind and to slave away, not questioning the system.

Hmm.

Or you could work hard and question the system at the same time.

No revolution comes to be via a lack of effort, I'm afraid.

and that is what i do. I even do a little extra (supplemental reading, etc) so that I can question the system more efficiently.
But we're kinda getting off topic.

yes, that might be why one of my best classes is pbobably US history.:)Because I question the validity of everything we learn.

*sigh*, well time to open up that quarter-foot thick SAT prep book. I'm taking the test in May, so I should have enough time to prepare for it.

But how do you study for a test when you don't even know what's on it? lol

Alright, thanks everyone,

I never took the SAT, In Wisconsin the ACT was the required test, never did the pretest, or anything like that, and scored a 32 on the test, which isnt too shabby. Basically think of it as the asvab(military entrance test, where they see if you will be shooting the bullets, or catching them) 90% of it tests your ability to problem solve, retention and the wonderful wonderful story problems, unless they changed the tests around, I reccomend doing some IQ tests online as well, they will help you out as well, since they pretty much run along the same vein as the SAT/ACT tests. I cant remember if Calculus is on the test, but sure that geometry, Algebra, Grammer, English skills etc will be on that test. Also, Take your time when you do take it, dont rush, and dont second guess, when you start doing that, then you are in some serious trouble. Other than that, your basic ability to retain useless knowledge will be very important. been out of school for almost 15 years, and I dont remember the last time I needed to know if train a was travelling east at 35 mph, and train b was travelling west at 55 mph, where would they bury the survivors of an airplane crash.
