a buddy of mine came over yesterday with his Xbox 360 and we played it for hours. we started with Halo 3 which was super fun but didn't really have that "wow" factor to it....then...we played Gears of War..i cranked the sound up to wallshaking level and drooled all over myself. that game alone is almost enough to make me buy a 360.
my buddy has had his 360 for atleast a year and hasn't ever had a problem out of it. which if you listen to the reports everyone makes the 360 sound like it's held together with scotch tape and destined to fall apart at any minute.
still no experience with the PS3 yet..i would like to try one of those before i decide
I say 360. All games are personal with your gamertag, and all games give you scores for different things, achievements, awards, etc. Live is also VERY good, gamertag's are awsome, and xbox has a really good way of working with all of it's games. You can also save movies onto it, music, pictures, etc. I think the PS3 is too complicated, and the 160 has been better from what I have seen so far. Also, the controller feels better than the PS3.
all in all the thing that lets the ps3 down is its OS and software at the moment (can be fixed easily)
I ripped my PS1(the big old chunky one) out of my cupboard last night after reading this, and hell yea, it runs great. My playstation 2 I think I have had for over 5 years now? And my brother is right behind me playing its heart out. The TV started playing up before the Playstation2, and they where brought at the exact same time LOL
PS3 OS does suck, yes. But they updated the PSP software alot, and it runs alot smother, and there are alot less bugs in it now then there where when I first got it. So I am guessing that the same thing will happen with the PS3.
I think you can even use your PSP as a wirless controller. And maby if you get your PS3 online, you will be able to get some kind of Network update like whats available on PSP. Or even download an installer though the browser on it. and install it from there.
It will get better. Im still with PS3. They last longer.

13Cent has a good point. I have noticed my that 2 out of 3 of the people I know with an XBox 360 will have problems with it. I know 3 people who even had to send theirs back for a new one because they got the dreaded 'Red Rings of Death.'
I will say it again, The PS3 does have better Stats, but the Xbox has some pretty damn good games out their for it. Get whatever you think will gowith your playing style the best. The PS3 fits mine, so thats why I got it.
Put simply graphical performance means next to nothing now, all games can look stunning and should look stunning. The 360 has the biggest library of games right now and if you're wanting variety then it's the console of choice, but if you're an avid MGS or GT fan then get a PS3, the best franchises are available on Playsation. Oh and as for Halo 3, underwhelming at best, as is Mass Effect.
The other point about the PS3 is that you'll be buying a Blu-ray player that can play PS3 games, given that the PS3 is cheaper than a blu-ray disc player, I believe.

I'd just like to point out that nobody has mentioned Grand Theft Auto 4 will be out for the PS3 soon enough (and judging by screenshots of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, the PS3 version looks decidedly juicier at this time).
And it can be said that Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and MGS 2 arguably (along with Gran Turismo possibly) made the PS2. I'm thinking GTA 4 will shift it in favour of the PS3 as GTA: Vice City did for its predecessor.
