I don't think passwording the server is the way to go to be honest. We are fairly strong with the system in place and it's up to us players as well as random console messages to encourage new players to use the forums and get new players to follow the rules. If they dont then it's sanction time, sad that it has to be this way but it is true that we would probably lose some fine additions to the community if the server had a password.
Yes we have some mighty OORP players, but they dont stay OORP for that long. It catches up with them.
I disagree. That's just a touch elitist. There's always room for more players - new ideas, new perspectives. Keeps things fresh. Keeps all the old campaigners on their toes. Prevents complacency.
The problem isn't the influx of new players. It's weeding out...well...the weeds. This has been stated.

A password? Sure. And put up a sign that says "Please hack our server!" too.
*Sarcasm ended.*
I can't agree more with what has already been said about NOT passwording the server and policing OORPers ourselves. There's what, six server admins? Surely to God(or what ever deity/entity/Sacred Chao you revere) there are enough of us RPers out there to give them a little more assistance with this than suggesting they just lock up the server. I'd think it would be a lot easier, and less time consuming to wade through a few hundred sanction reports a month, then it would be wallow through a few thousand eMails requesting server access. And burying the server password in the rules is not an effective background check. I mean, that is, in effect what is being suggested by recommending that the admins lock the server, isn't it? A background check to determine the bona fides of a player's RP intentions.
Why not bolster the ranks of the admins? By Crom's Bristly Blue Beard there has to be a least two or three likely candidates out there who might be willing to police the server in an admin capacity.

i disagree with the idea that putting the password on the forums would push good players away. if someone wanted to play the game they would just follow the signs...just like they did to download the mod.
i'm not sure where the idea that having to type in a password is so hard came from. it's annoying i agree, but this is just a suggestion to try to stem the flow of OORP.
i know i play at odd times when the server isn't maxed out but the percentage i run into is far less than 10 RP'ers to 1 OORP'er. and i really don't feel like spending my RP time posting screenies in the sanction reports. the thing is...what if most everyone feels like i do? would not the OORP'ing drive away the good players just as quick if not quicker than having to find & type in a password...or whatever solution we come up with.
i'm not sure what the correct solution is. i just fear i'll get burnt out on FL if i can't RP more when i'm online

There is no correct solution, Drey. That's the problem. It's a lose/lose situation.
IMO all you can do is try to ignore the bad stuff so you can remember all the good stuff that goes on.

with my play times i miss the good stuff though....well i did actually get to RP with someone over the weekend for once....it was nice and refreshing....just a shame that it doesn't happen more often.
i've pretty much decided to make a "no-PVP" character so i can RP more....i hope

How do you survive? I don't get that much time to play, but I've still got three accounts!
off-topic
yeah i try to devote myself to one thing instead of spreading myself too thin, i feel like my RP would suffer that way. plus i only get a few hours of gameplay friday...and maybe saturday. if i had more time to play i'd probably have more accounts.
all that being said i may put Mon'Star on the back burner for a while while i work on this new guy.
Reviving this topic because it becomes ever more relevant as me move into a new Mod and are in a position to make changes with ease. Dreygon's original idea pretty much hits the nail on the head.
Take the current Gallia situation for example. Mule pretty much made it clear on the topics list in the title of "DON'T GO TO GALLIA" that nobody should go to Gallia. There is no doubt that the server is crashing because of people who have not joined the GC going to Gallia, ergo have not seen the notice about server crashes linked to activity in Gallia.
Yes, make a a notice in the Mod description in FLMM saying they must join the GC to get the password.
It will solve many rule related and uninformed player problems.
On that note how about we make the password "Do not go to Gallia" and leave a note in the server description that you can see in FL that that is the password.
