Walking down the hall, you are acutely aware of the drab lighting, gray carpet, and tasteless elevator music wafting through the corridors. Another day. Another prefab corporate office building. Another job application. Maybe this time it would be different . . .
439 . . . 441 . . . 443. You glance down at the slip of paper in your hand, noting the circled number. A small placard by the door reads “Constellation Cartography - H/R Department”. This is the place. You push the door open and recoil in surprise - the lights are off?
“In or out, but close the door!” The voice is curt, but not hostile. A woman who does this every day. You close the door behind you, and your eyes widen with astonishment. The entire floor is a display panel showing a massive map of the Sirius Sector. As your eyes adjust, you see the woman at a nearby desk gesture toward one of the systems. A holographic map of the system floats upward out of the map, and you recognize it as Tau-31. As you glance over it, you marvel at the precision and completeness of the chart, noticing in particular that even the orientation of Battleship Carcassonne is accurate. However, something is very strange.
“Your map,” you say to the woman behind the desk. “It’s not quite right.” She looks up, her eyebrows knitting together quizzically. Your eyes have adjusted sufficiently now to read the nametag: Eliza Whiting.
“What seems to be the problem?” she asks, standing up and walking over to the projection. You raise your arm and point to BC45 on the chart.
“Planet Harris is missing. It should be right here.” Your finger sinks into the holographic projection, causing it to flicker slightly. Eliza’s skepticism gives way to a thin smile.
“Here,” she says, offering you a few pages of paper. “Not everyone who comes in here gets to fill one of these out. Why don’t you give it a try?” The document is a questionnaire, filled with questions about geography and mapping. You sit down at a chair and start to fill it out.
