I've been reading the forums for a week now. I used to own FL years back and I just had to rebuy it a while back. I've played Discovery mod in the single player and if I ever get to solve connecting probs I'd like to try my hand in RP servers. I've read the server rules :rtfm:but honestly they are not very clear to me as of yet.
So what's with the IDs and factions?
I understand the need to RP also equipment wise, but where is the line? I'm just confused about the differences between Civilian ID, freelancer ID, trader ID etc. Also factions confound me. And licences. So many things I do not understand.
Why not make IDs un-equippable if you fly a certain ship?
I'm sure in due time these things would start to make sense, but in the mean time I'd love someone to point out simple follow these basic principles and you'll do fine.

Read them once again and again and again and so on. You will get the point.

There is a simple answer: couse there is a countless number of ships which can be use by players connected with diffrent factions (NPCs or Disco) and those ships can be use by one faction aswell as by the other one and, following on from that they can use a diffrent ID.

Staff roles:
Your ID identifies the role your character is involved in, for example, police, military, pirate etc.
Faction identifies which political/ideological/ethnic group that your character belongs to, along with what part of that government (if applicable) or group that he/she belongs to, for example, Liberty Police Inc, Mollys, Republican Shipping, etc.
Both of them say slightly different things about who the character is, and the kinds of things that the character does. They also restrict you to weapons, equipment, and ships that are related to both the ID and the Faction. Outcasts can't use Corsair ships because they are at war, and Trader ID'd characters can't fly battleships because those ships belong to the military not commercial operations.
You might simplify it to this : the faction tells you WHO you are along with who your friends and enemies are; the ID tells you what your job is.

I've read the rules twice since I've come here. Why so little compared to that other guy (not saying you're wrong or anything)? Because, you can break the rules down to this:
1.) Have good RP and always stick to it
2.) USE COMMON SENSE
In RP, if you get shot down, how you gonna re-engage? You died. In RP, you wouldn't spout OOC (gibberish, for all RP purposes!). In RP, you wouldn't be a Corsair with an Outcast ship.
If you stick to those two guidelines that I have said, you will do just fine. I have, I don't quote rules, or even have them memorized. I just stick to those, never been sanctioned yet.
meh, I'd only say use comon sense, and do remember nearly anything is possible since this is rp server. You've just got to imagine a damn good story for something hard to get...
Finally I was able join the fray last night and it looks promising. I like the challenge of just flying in Liberty space since all you do is quite risky in Starflier at the beginning with a lot of NPC enemies around even in gunboats.
Ok back to questions and answers section. I know most of these will hopefully become clear but I toss them here also. Mostly I'm concerned about carrying loot and cargo questions.
1) Can you use any ID to tractor stuff in?
2) Under level 30 you are supposed to intouchable unless you are asking for it yourself? What about smuggling etc.? Common sense makes me think that you should not be above the law even then, correct?
3) Case: I have Rogues in my hold. Can a PC Rogue affiliated chap stop me and "kindly ask me to jettison the flotsam, or else..." aka release his fellows if I'm under lvl 30? I mean my kids back at the colonies are hungry and it's quite tough to scrape a living with a Starflier with level 2 guns doing missions, so a couple of those baddies sold to authorities can make a big difference.
4) There's so much chatter in the air that it's quite hard to know if NPC is addressing me. And it's quite hard to pull off the tough guy "are you talking to me" -act without soiling my pants in a starflier when there are 8 of his NPC buddies around. Especially when you hear Bingo I'm about 1 second away from pushing SHIFT+W. What is considered loot to those NPCs (meaning Bounty Hunters)? Pirates/xenos/etc?
5) How to scan fellows ID or know his flavors what comes to factions? My self-preservation while flying starflier is quite deeply ingrained and advices me to steer clear of all players with serious hardware at their finger tips. You never know if it really ticks them off or not if you join the formation with them while studying their ships. It's like staring someone at the bus stop too long and you are asking for trouble.
6) Are you allowed to carry equipment beyond your ship level as loot to be sold? Or carry any loot equipment even if the level is under you ships level? Equipping non faction stuff is bad I know.
EDIT:
Quote:7.3 When ship stats are changed, players are obliged to unequip all items that don't suit new stats as soon as possible. Carrying items that outclass the ship is considered cheating and will be treated accordingly.
According to this I'm not allowed to take in loot weapons even under level 30. Hmm...
2.) Yes, you are untouchable unless you have a non-Civilian ID (like LPI, Outcast, etc.), and yes, you are above the law. They may try to RP punishments for it, but they couldn't shoot you.
3.) He can ask you, and I suggest for good RP that you do, but he can't shoot you.
4.) Yeah, lawful ships ask you to drop lawful and unlawful pilots, bounty hunters ask for unlawful and cruiser/cap-ship pilots (that's why you see Piranhas dive-bombing Cruisers).
5.) Not sure what you mean by that one...
6.) Yes, you can. That means having mounted weapons above class, a cheat or bug, I think. As in, sometimes the stats for a ship changes from mod version to mod version. Say, you had all level 5 hardpoints, with level 5 guns, but next version the ship has level 4 hardpoints. You'd have to sell the 5s ASAP and get 4s.
Oh, and Mr. Good-Newb (compliment! VERY big compliment) join the BLS or LPI! I need some company in the BLS and the LPI is really good for helping new guys. Links are in my sig. /shameless self-advertisement

Well, that's an RP decision, really. And I think yours is pretty good. If you fly a little fragile Starflea you really wouldn't want to get close to a behemoth who could easily destroy you just by accidentally maneuvering in the wrong way around you. What I'd suggest is that you indeed stand clear or try a better scanner, try the ones with the best cargo scan range. Those are the best for "peaking other people's business" per se.
